Kimber Solo 9mm question

A friend of mine called me today and asked if I would pose this question to someone that I knew.

He just bought a Kimber Solo 9mm, and he has about 400 rounds through it, and he said it jams about every second or third round, have any of you experienced this?

He has two factory mags, and two aftermarket mags, and the same results with both.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Make sure he assembled it properly. I can't remember off hand what it is, but there is a certain way in the owners manual to assemble it or it will do this.

What ammo is he using. My Kimber Ultra carry will feed anything except Perfecta ammo.

Are you sure it is the gun and he isn't limp wristing it?

It's at the end of this video. Has to do with the spring.

He has tried all kinds of ammo with the same results!

I also asked him about limp wristing, he said no.

I have read that some of these guns run well but my experence has been different. Before the SOLO was announced a Kimber sales rep called and asked if I would be interested in testing a new pistol they would be making. She was very secretive and would not tell me what it was. A few days later the first Solo I had seen arrived. I ran I think 125 rounds of 115 gr ball through it with a few problems but then it got much worse and was choking a lot. I called Kimber and a tech told me I should change recoil springs, as well as ammo. After messing with the thing for a while it never really ran right. I returned that gun to Kimber. I used to see a lot of problems with Solos here on our range but admit I haven't seen any problems lately. I really don't see many Solos anymore.
As I said some folks like them and I hear if you get the correct springs and the ammo it likes all is well. This might be somewhat acceptable in a competition gun or a range gun but absolutely not in a self defense gun. There is no way given my experience with the Solo that I would carry one or recommend it for a customer.
Before you guys climb on and tell me how great your SOLO is don't. I am very happy you got a good one.

I have a Kimber pro carry, not solo, but had a similar problem with that, until it blew up. After getting it back, I found that they replaced the spring. Never had the problem again, but the slide is an absolute nightmare to pull back. This IS, the LAST Kimber, I ever by. I had my heart on buying one of their rifles, but after dealing with one of their supposedly great handguns, I will pass. Good luck to your friend. I would tell him to go buy a sig or glock. At least they will go bang when you pull the trigger

I also got a lot of stove pipes with this gun. Four different ammo, still same problem.

Don't mean to sound confrontational about this but to be honest, its a Kimber. I would never trust one as a carry weapon.

And I have wanted one for a while, mainly because they look so good.
Guess I learned something today, I should have asked before. Thanks for the info. [:I]

I have to say my experience mirrors Ricci's. We sure send a high percentage of them back. They say you have to use 124gr or 147gr ammo but even with that they don't always work.

I bought one myself before I realized what a turd they were. Mine seems to work fine however I stopped using it as a carry piece.

After we send them back for repair MOST seem to work but even after coming back from Kimber some still don't work. We still carry them but warn the buyers about how finicky they are.
