Hello drobs. I am glad you got your mind right and returned!
While you were gone I bought one of these.

    NNIG35ul.png

    1858 Remington Sheriff's model, .44 with 5 1/2 inch barrel

We know that Pietta quality has fluctuated over the years but this gun is built right! If you don't have one you should buy and buy now.
Available at Cabelas for $278. I like the first one so much I bought a second one.

    Welcome back!

2nd this I bought one too a while back

and he gave me some great advice about mine [^]

I got one of those Sheriff's myself.

I put a $15 Wolff 32280 reduced power mainspring in it and my full length Pietta 1858, completely changes the handling of the gun. Makes the hammer easier to cock + smooths up the action.

My latest GB purchase - $200 Uberti El Patron 357 mag:

Needs about $75 of parts to replace the ejector rod, housing, spring, and screw. I'll probably get a new set of screws as well.

I keep donating $ to PSA and have this AR Pistol plus another matching kit to build.

I like to drink and have been know to put my foot in my mouth and make an * out of myself.

Me too. I thought it was the alcohol, so I quit drinking (but it still happens). Glad you came back.
Enemies of armed self-defense focus on the gun. They ignore the person protected with that gun.

See, this is why you need to be on the forum. To give me advice.
I was going to order the 32280 mainspring. The second Sheriff's model I bought you need to be King Kong to cock it. It is heavier than the first one I bought just 2 months earlier.

As we know, Pietta quality fluctuates, although, other wise both guns are great, lock up tight and well finished.

So the 32280 is for the Colt but it says it will fit most other guns.
Will it fit the Pietta Sheriff's Remington?

That's correct. The Colt mainspring works in both the Sheriff and Full Size 1858 Pietta. I believe it works in Uberti 1858's too.

Don't buy a Wolff sear bolt spring, though. The combination of the 2 Wolff springs in a Pietta Remington 1858 = failure to fire caps.

Here's a tool to make loading with that short Sheriff loading lever easier:
    http://cowboybullets.com/SliXhand_p_43.html

Personally I think I could duplicate that tool with a short piece of copper pipe and a hacksaw / Dremmel.

In the meantime, I load the Sheriff cylinder on my full length 1858 frame. Capping the cylinder when it's back on the Sheriff frame.

Lastly there's been a huge improvement to capping for Remington 1858's and Colts for that matter.

Fella out of Poland makes a Polish Capper that holds a full tin+ of caps and was originally designed for the 1858 nipples and now has modified it a bit to fit both Colt's and Remingtons.

Website is a little goofy but look for the US Flag:
    https://www.polishcappers.com/

I bought 2 and gave 1 to Black powder shooter 44 on youtube to do a review on:
