Was at the local sporting goods chain (Dunhams) and picked up a Tasco
Scope, 2-8 X 32 compact(#dwc28X32), for $20.00 is it worth it?

My philosophical response, because I don't know much about scopes:

If it gives you pleasure to own it and you will have a number of opportunities to use it, then it was more than worth it.

Don, it all depends on what use you planned for the scope. If you were putting it on your Mcmillan M-40 sniper rifle you are going to be bitterly disappointed. If you are going plinking with your Ruger 10-22 you'll probably be satisfied. I do not think that there is any firearms product as misunderstood as scopes. I've had countless customers ask why a brand X Chinese scope will sell for $59 at a gun show and my Zeiss/Steiner/Kahles with the exact same specs costs $1000+. They both perform the same function and "look" the same. Why the diffence? Most of these $20 scopes have poor optical charactoristics, unevenly applied lens coatings- if they are even really coated, are not sealed correctly and will fog, cannot be zeroed or will not hold there zero and the variable power adjuster will eventually fail making it a fixed power scope...you can only guess which power it might break at. Tasco is a well known name and they do manufacture some good optics. I still feel that Simmons offers the most for the least in the lower end of the market. At least at $20 you can afford to easily replace your Tasco if it fails. By the way, wholesalers can have some fantastic sales for volume purchasers; your sporting goods store still made a nice profit on that $20.

The cheap price on the Tasco is because they are no longer in business. You probably got a real good deal. Just don't plan to return it for service if it goes bad.
