My 870 Express is broken!

Ok I've had it like only a few months, and I usually keep it, dissasembled in my jeep. I know that's bad but I'm in college and there's really no where to keep it where it's easilly accesiable.

Anyway, I went to use it one day, and I dunno what happened but the spring that ejects the spent shell is bent and the bolt hits it so it won't return, so if I want to shoot, it's one round at a time and then I have to push the spring out of the way.

I know it's covered under warrenty but the problem is I'm going back home to California and I don't know if I can send it out for warrenty work and then have them mail it to cali. Also the place I got it is like an hour away and they never have them in stock. How much would this piece cost to get fixed? If it's not too much I might just eat the cost in order to have my gun all summer. Anyone know where I can go in the boulder area to get this fixed? Thanks a ton!

Why dont you buy the spring and do it yourself. Try http://www.Remington.com or call them at 1-800-243-9700. Maybe they can tell you where can find the part or get it fixed locally.

Take it to a competent gunsmith in your area. Have him show you what is wrong so you actually learn something from your mistake. Have him fix it. It is your first gun so a couple of dollars towards an easy fix is priceless compared to the knowledge that you could gain from the experience. These things are all part of firearm ownership. If you know nothing about your firearm and don't care to learn anything about it, then you shouldn't own one in the first place.

yeah I understand. I'm just saying I can't take the gun inside my dorm cause I will get kicked out of school and I don't want to take it completely apart in the parking lot. Gimme a break.

Also the "take it to a competant gunsmith" is easy to say if you don't live in boulder where there are no gun shops.

We all knew nothing at one time so cut me some slack, christ...

The spring will probably bend back into place, be carfeul. This may get it working temporarily yet it may never be "right" and you can get it replaced later by a gunsmith.

I had this exact problem before and I watched while the gunsmith replaced it in minutes with the proper tools. The proper tolls that you, nor I nor the other posters have.

Keeping the gun in the vehicle is a good idea but it may still be some kind of violation since it's probably parked on school property, don't get busted!

    Nate,

I bought an 870 Special Field a couple of years ago that was missing the whole spring.I found a guy that replaced it for me for $50 bucks.
Everybody else wanted at least $100 or more.
Just an ounce of prevention for ya bud, don't let'em screw on the
    price to repair it.

    Just my .02 cents

    Good Luck

yeah 50 bucks is WAY too much considering the gun is literally months old. I need to take better care of it but again, it's in my jeep, the jeeps 1/2 mile away so yeah I know it is probably a violation but it's under the seat and stuff.

I actually broke the piece off today, gun works ok, it jams sometimes but if you tilt it as to let gravity take the shell out it works fine.

This summer when I'm back home I'll be able to keep it with me and I'll get oil and learn how to take proper care of it.

    Thanks guys.

CannonBall--I know all about Boulder. I also had a shotgun in college and had to take some extreme measures myself so that I could have it for pheasant hunting. However, I wasn't slamming you. Using a firearm that is not fully functional and mechanically sound in every way is like driving a car with bad brakes because there is no mechanic anywhere near where I live. It's just not wise.

Nate, before going nuts about the whole thing, I'd call remington up and ask them what they think. They might be able to get you the spring and give you some instruction on how to replace it...You can probably get some plans online on how to do it your self. I haven't bought any shotguns yet (probably be my next purchase) but i have found some sites that have full plans on the pistols that I have. After you take it apart a few times, you'll be surprised how simple of a device a gun really is.

good luck and give them a call, you might be losing sleep over nothing.

Go to the following website and order the AGI Armorer's Course for the 870 Express Shotgun:

    http://dillonprecision.com/template/p.cfm?maj=34&min=2&dyn=1&

Fix it yourself and learn something in the process. You'll be glad you did.

Any decent smith in CA should be able to fix an 870, and as far as I know they don't have anything against 870s yet.

Dont automatically assume your college has an anti-gun regulation unless you've actually seen it.

Many colleges strongly discourage gun ownership on campus, but havent gone so far as to ban them altogether, simply because most of them realize that if you live on campus and have no family nearby, you've got to put them somewhere.

I've even heard of some colleges having active shooting clubs.

If you can set yourself up a little workspace where you can dedicate some time to tinkering, you'll be far happier in the long run.

cop told me "don't even take that into your room to clean it, cause it'll be the last time you go into your room"

Thanks a lot, I'm sure it's covered under warrenty just wondering if it's a really big deal kinda, I dunno. Thanks a ton!

Bullzeye--He's in Boulder. That's all he needed to say. I think there are laws there about having dreams about guns at night.

There are two rivets on the left side of the receiver that hold on the ejector and ejector spring, you can get the spring from gun parts, the site is http://www.gunpartscorp.com it should come with the rivets but order a couple extra for future use or if you screw up. You will have to find some one that knows a little about sheetmetal to drill out the rivets with the proper size drill bit. and the tools to squeeze the new rivets properly, I have done several of them and it doesn't take more than ten minutes if you have the tools.

Ah yes....Boulder...where only the bodyguards of the rich and famous are allowed to carry guns. I almost forgot.

I hate being a downer, but if you cant bring it in your room, and you dont have any real place to look at it or tinker with it, what use is it really having it?

Such a shame, too. I need to do my research before I move anywhere.

Okay so you got the skinny and good advice on the repairs of your 870, but please tell why you have to go back to Kalifornia? Just wondering.

    Nate,
Like some other posters said, call Remington, explain your problem with the gun, and your situation about going back to Cal. They are usually preety good on their turn-a-round time on repairs.
At least when they do the job, you'll know it's 100% right, and if they have to replace the rivets, you wont even notice it.
They can ship it right back to you, but check your laws there as well as Cal. Good Luck.
