What kind of big game hunt can you do for $1000?

Well if my brother & I could have drawn nonresident mule deer tags in Nevada, we were going to go out there and hunt them and spend around $ 1000 each in the process. A friend lives out there who invited us - he was going to provide the roof and the guiding. Of course we didn't draw tags.

So now I'm wondering if there is much of any other worthwhile hunts we can do for about the same amount of money.

I think I've seen ads for Pronghorns out west or bear up north in the $1000 range. Are those hunts worth the effort?

Any other ideas (no fenced game ranches please)? We live in Illinois & figure on driving.

There's many places to hunt without breaking the budget.
Antelope--We hunted in Wyoming, southwest of Casper in unit either
46 or 48, lots of BLM ground. We stayed in campers, no guide. Get
a map that shows BLM ground. Several ranchers allow hunting and have
a little can nailed to the gait post to put in you antelope "tag",
think they get paid so much from div of wildlife for each antelope.
Elk - Colorado has lots areas open to hunting. One of tha areas we hunted was Routt (spelling) national forest between Walden and
Steamboat springs. Your first thing to do would be get maps of
the area that shows national forests, BLM ground. Hunted in San Juan
mts in southern Colorado. List could go on almost forever.

As BT99 said you can hunt antelope in several states for around $1000. Even some guided antelope hunts in WY are less than $1000, before tag, and you can hunt in NM for not much more than that. They may not be trophy ranches but the experience is great and chance are you will take a good animal.

    CHIPMUNKS,
Just kidding, depending on what the $1000.00 bucks has to include.
I can do my trips to Idaho for Mule Deer and Bear for like three weeks from the time I leave home till I get back (That's from Maine) for around $1500 - 1800, and that's traveling alone.

I drive out and back, stay in my pickup camper most of the time, and a few nights at a motel for some R & R. My tags are around $400.00, my gas and tolls are around $600.00, and the rest is living expenses. That's figuring aroud 6500 miles total trip.

I don't use outfitters, I hunt on my own. If my partner comes along, we save a quite a bit. Hope this helps. Any other questions, just ask. I've been doing these trips to Idaho and Montana since 1974.

    Gino
