Need ideas

Alright heres the deal. When I talked my wife into letting me get our St. Bernard (Big Stupid * Child Cujo ), I had it all worked out. We showed up at the farm And Cathy was nice enough to bring us around back so Danny couldn't see Cujo's daddy or the field of 50+ Saints playing with the cattle. She fell for it as soon as his chubby * came up to her and tried to set up on his hind legs and toppled over. She's a sucker for cuddly things. Well that time my recon/scouting trips paid off, not this time. She loves the dog but he is a handfull, especially when I'm deployed. Now I'm having a very hard time trying to convince her that getting another dog (beagle or such) would do amazing things for Cujo. They are VERY social dogs and he doesn't seem to understand that after this long the cat doesn't want to play. I need ideas or just maybe a different approach. And no I won't just go out and pick up the dog and bring him home saying "Suprise!"

She's a sucker for cuddly things? How did you come into the picture? Sorry bro. I couldn't resist.I'm not married so I don't have a suggestion. I just had to give you a hard time. I'll shoot you an email when I get home tonight.

Well, this is evil, and decitful, but... Take the dog for a walk, or for a ride in the car, to go for a walk somewhere farther away, come back home without him. Explain how he got away chasing a cat, hes just so strong, last time you saw him he was running like a runaway freight train trying to catch the cat. Meanwhile, take the dog to a friends house, a good friends house, who understands you. Put out flyers and an add in the paper, looking for your lost dog. Explain to the wife after a couple weeks that you have given up, and want to get another dog. Go get the new dog. Now heres the tricky part, but its so easy. Have someone your wife doesnt know, call the house about a week after you have gotten the new dog, explaining how they found this dog, knew it was lost, but couldnt find out who's it was, and low and behold, heard from a friend about the flyer that was posted, and got your number. You can figure out the rest. I told you it was deceitful, and that you would need a really good friend to do this for you, cause when it all blows up in your face, you will need a place to sleep!

Instrument....Unless you've got something that'll keep a Beagle occupied, I'd advise against one. They're hunters! And diggers.they don't care where they dig either. Rabbit hole, mouse hole, couch, carpet. They're not picky. They'll only play with the big dog as long as he can keep up. Which ain't very long. If you want a companion dog for the St. Bernard, go to your local animal shelter or rescue facility and pick out something a bit closer to his size than a Beagle. We've got a Great Pyrenees and a Lab/Chow mix and they get along great. You can find some really nice dogs at the "no kill" shelters. Mudge the experienced

Mudge- That brings up another point. I love big dogs and have generally have never had too mush use for small dogs. A good freind of mine swears by beagles. I'm not too sure. I just know that she won't EVER go for it if the new dog is a beast, but if I got a small dog I wouldn't mind using him for chasing bunnies(just don't tell mamma) she don't mind me killing other animals, but you should've seen her face when we had rabbit for dinner ....Rob- I like it....couldn't do it though. It would break her heart. Maybe bring her to a pound "for something for the cat"( ) and should we become attached to some little guy, I'm in.[This message has been edited by instrumentofwar (edited 04-08-2002).]

Was it Fairbanks or Anchorage you were headed to? That little Beagle just might freeze his tush at -40. Train the dog with Forced Training. Any dog is capable of being trained to do what you want it to do, especially while in the house. Never let anyone get it excited while in the house and make sure all visitors know the rules that the dog must live by while in the house. The yard should be the dogs territory where it can do pretty much what it wants. A little bit of training and this Bernard will make a fine pet. Dogs have a tendacy to do whatever the owners will let it get away with. If you need some training advice, go to www.uklabs.com and click on the training link. Admittedly this is a site for training retrievers, but some of that stuff will work with all dogs.

Robsguns are you planing a career in politics? I would bet you could teach Willie a thing or two.
The trip to the shelter sounds like a good idea to me. Every time my Wife gets near one it costs me around $50.00. Then she takes the dog and house breaks it teaches it tricks. And then gives it away. She has such a big hart.

Everytime we get a puppy we have problems, I get tired of scooping up landmines after walking downstairs at night and stepping in them. We can't ever train them so they end up going bye bye. A few years ago I bought a Pit Bull puppy. I went out on the raod for a couple weeks, came home at night and the little $%!@#^! wouldnt let me in bed! Ever walk into your bedroom to hear deep growling, call the dogs anme and have it growl even harder? That thing went down the road in a hurry!
We went to the Humane society and got a 2 year old Keeshound(sp?), that has got to be the best dog we ever had, freindly and smart as the devil. Only problem she has an addiction to girl scout cookie that is almost uncontrollable! This mut goes nut's and will reach up and steal cookies out of your hand, it's too funny to scold her for it but you should see her now, god is she FAT! We ran out of girlscout cookies so hopefully she loses some weight.

Here we have a large pet supply warehouse store. The SPCA sets up an adoption clinic there on saturday mornings. You'd be suprised how many hunting type dogs they get. I'd call around to the stores near you and find out if anyone does this near you. Then just take her shopping for Cujo. Then make sure she sees the puppies.

My advice would be just talk to her, she likes cuddlies so tell her you want to get a play mate for cujo so the cat can get some rest.

I was just thinking about this post yesterday, and here it is again. Did you get another dog yet?
He Dog, that has been said before.
Tools, that kind of hurt, being compared to Bill I mean. I wouldnt actually do that, for the same reason instrumentofwar wouldnt. My wife still wishes we hadnt lost a cat she will never forget about, shoot, I wont forget it either.

Nope guys, no new dog as of yet. I'm going to have to wait until I get back home first, it looks as though I fly on the 15th of MAY, keeping fingers crossed.

Not sure how it'll be berfore I can leave the house after getting back from Kosovo, however. The wife has told her family not to bother trying to call or come by, the phone's coming off the hook and we're not answering the door. We have to make up for 6+ months ofthis all equalsand after that alot of. GOD I CAN'T WAIT TO GET HOME!!!![orange]
