Getting a Bulldozer

I have decided to clear some of my land, And dig a pond. I had hired people to do dozer work befor. Thay charge around $400.00 an acre. So I started calling around to rent one. I have decided to rent a D-5 Cat with a root rake. It cost $1,500 for a week. And includes delivery. Thay are bringing it tomorrow morning.
Last dozer I opperated was I think a D-12. It was a monster thay had at a stone querry I used to work at. I am not sure how much work this dozer can do. I am hopeing to clear around 8 acres. And dig a 100X60 pond.
I also have a list of friends and neighbors who want to play with it.

I have not had any dealing with a D-5 since the 1980`s, this one was rather small. If there are no large trees, then you may do okay with it.Is your land heavily wooded? If it is and including the pond it will push you to get done, just my opinion.Good luck and work safe.

Tools, How many hours are figured for your price?? Can you run it round the clock for that price or is it priced for 8 hour days?? I recently bought a JD 350D and I enjoy the heck out of running it. I think it is the most fun you an have with your clothes on. It is small and for the large trees you have to work at cutting roots but if the ground is soft, you can get some very large trees down.

I have 20 acres to clear and want to build a couple of small ponds and work at it when I feel like it. You will always find friends who want to borrow it to knock down a few trees. Tom

It is based on 40 hr. but thay said if it went a few hrs over thay would let it slide. I dont think a lot of people are lineing up to rent them right now. The man wanted to even bring it over the same day I called to check on prices. He even droped $75.00 on the delivery.

I have 72 acres of the thickest woods you will ever find. It looks like a jungle--much of it you can't even walk through. Many of the trees are old oaks and elms 4-6 feet in diameter. It sure would be good to clear all the small stuff out leaving only the largest trees, about every 40-50 yards apart. But it would be a big job even with a large bulldozer, and the cost has held me back thus far. I figure it would take an experienced operator and dozer about 8 weeks to do the work, and around here, that runs about $24,000.

You are right, they don't make much money when they are parked. I also checked on renting one and he wanted $300 to deliver and pick it up!! I hope to hell his dozer is still sitting in his yard. I also found out right away that they aren't really much good at building a pond. I needed a lot of dirt brought in to make a levee instead of just a hole in the ground. I'm still working on it and probably will be for a loooog time. Tom

Has anyone ever called a Timber Company. They will come out tell you what trees they want, clear them out and pay you for them.

    Hey TOOLS,

Wish I had some time and could come up from Charleston to help! Years back I "played" just a bit with my Dad's Cats (955 and 977); sure beats a pick and shovel!

Hope the weather stays dry for the pond work.

I checked into the timber thing, But thay told me that I would need to wait at least 10yrs. My land had been looged about 15yrs ago.
With the drought I dont think I will have much trouble digging the pond. Maybe with filling it though.
I am putting the pond in front of the house. the house sits on a hill. I am going to push the dirt up into a berm and make kind of a dam. It should be nice to look at from the front porch.
When we had the area cleared for the house we found a underground stream running across the property. Have you ever seen a D-9 swim? The man thought for sure he had lost it. But he caught a log with one of the tracks and got it out. You could not walk over that spot for several months with out sinking in. I hope that the D-5 wont sink in.
The same stream feeds the neighbors pond. And it is still full. Even with the drought.
If any of you can get to Bethune come on. All the neighbors allready are comeing over to play. We might just threw some of that freshly disasembled pig on the grill and have us a bulldozing party.

After waiting all morning. Thay finely delivered the dozer around 2:30. Thay forgot the root rake. When I called the office thay said that thay could not deliver it till Tuesday. But if I wanted I could come get it. I told them NO! Even if I went and got it I still could not use it. The bracket on one sid that it attaches to is bent shut. And belive it or not I dont have a rosebud tip for my torch.
After I got ahold of the head man he said that thay would try to bring the rake and the service truck to fix the bracket tomorrow.
Guess I will just have to wait and see.

The best way to handle large projects is buy the equiptment, use it all you want and then sell it. Most of the time you can get more than you paid for it if you watch what you are doing.

I own a D5 and it is fine for me.
If you want a lot done in a week, you may be asking too much.
It is a farmer or gentleman's dozer around here.
Work is best done with a D9.

On my place, letting loggers in to cut the trees they want is not a good idea. All they want is the trunks of the large hardwood trees. They leave stumps and branches which is a bigger mess than I alreay have. With the stumps everywhere, I can't get in with my tractor and push the brush up in piles for burning, I can't plant grass or mow or anything other than watch vines take over the downed limbs. If the loggers would just take out the stumps, it would be a good deal to let them in. But the time for them to remove stumps makes the harvesting of timber unprofitable.

greetings, we use the d-5 for bridge slopes, as they are highly manuverable, and not top heavy, for the big jobs we use d-8s&9s. and the straw bosses jump all over you if you push more than a blades worth of dirt. but i supose you can dig a 100 by 60 area if you take your time. respt submitted dads-freehold

    Update
Thay finely brought the rake at noon today. But dint bring a torch with a rosebud. So I used my torch with the cutting head to heat it. When I set up the torch the man remarked that it was bigger than his. Go figgur. It took about 20 minutes to heat the bracket to where it would move. And another 5 to move it far enough.
Then the man asked if I had a hoist. I said WHY. He said to install the rake. I told him that you didnt need a hoist. You just drive into it. and it slids up the blade. He couldnt belive it. I showed him. The man rents out this equipment and dont know anything about it.
I do have one complaint about the dozer itself. It has a joystick. I like the ones with steering breaks. With the steering breaks you only need one hand to operate the blade. and the other is free most of the time. With the joystick you must keep your hand on it all the time. And your other hand is working the blade. So you cant scratch, pick your nose, wipe your forhead or even drink a beer.
I was abel to clear about 1 1/2 acres today. The seat belt quit working so now Im haveing to take it easyer so it wont threw me off.
Last night my neighbor came over. Right after work to check it out. He came over later and said his Wife was in a bad mood and he didnt know why. Toolbabe talked to her and found out that he was suposed to meet her at a resturant after work. She waited for 2 houres for him. He was so excited about the bulldozer he for got all about her.

Boy, Tools and Rafter are lucky that they don't live in
California where I do. They would never be able to clear land
like that. Those enviormentalist would be on your backside so
fast it would make your head spin! Hell, you might put some owl
out of his nest or harm some rat or frog! Even worse, some nuttie
girl might climb up one of your trees and stay up there for a year!

Go for it guys! I could watch trucks and tractors run all day!

Can't help myself, its in my blood thanks to my Dad! He took
me everywhere to watch them when I was a kid. It just runs in the
family I guess, my grandsons love it too.

Was on the dozer most all day today. Right now I am clearing one of the property lines. It has a lot of large trees and cudzue all over them. The trees are no proublum but that cudzue will stop the dover in its tracks.
The neighbor came over again tonight. He wanted the dozer so bad. I traded it for his 01 dodge 4X4 truck, a 55 gallon barrel and 3 beers. He is going to bring it back tomorrow when I get home from Church. Then I have to trade back. But I keep the beer.
The shooting range is looking good now. Cant wait to try it out.

Yes 4 Wheeler to much fun.
Spent all afternoon on it. Got the seat belt working so I could realy go at it. But the throttle quit so I had to lift up on the deaccelarator with my foot. Then the joy stick for the blade started to stick. But I kept going. But now it is overheating. I have to keep stoping and let it cool down. Tried rinesing the fines on the radeator. You should have seen the mud run out. But it did not help. I also tried to grease the dozer. but most of the grease zerks would not take grease so I gave up on that.
I am going to call the rental place tuesday and tell them to bring me another dozer.
