What's the best deal you ever got on a gun?

Having a passion for fine quality guns, I rarely run accross a bargain...usually end up paying whatever it takes to get a limited edition or one of a kind. Last weekend was an exception....bought a "Lew Horton" limited production (only 300 made) "Classic Gold Cup". They sold new for about $1300 in the early 90's....picked one up that looks to be NIB for $950.....one of our resident experts indicated he sold one a while back for over $2000.....made my day!

Friday I picked up a As New Ruger P97 .45 for $200.00 less than 50 rounds fired through her. She still needs a little breaking that will hopefully come tomorrow morning!

50 years ago I traded a Charlie Gerringer (sp?) Louisville Slugger baseball bat for a 41 cal Colt SAA. Couldn't find ammo, so I sold the gun $45.00 IIRC to help pay for a car. C'est la vie!

A few years ago I had a aquaintence offered me what he said was an HK47 or something (he had no idea what it was), for $300, I told him there wern't no such critter ... he ended up trading it to someone else for some work on his car, then a couple months later the guy he had traded it to called me because he had heard I was interested in it and needed he cash. I told him to bring it by as I'd never got a chance to see it. He brought it buy and said he had to have $600 for it, when I finally got to see it, I couldn't believe it, ... it was an HK-93 and durn near mint with collapsable stock ... I ended up letting him get to me for $500. I picked up a few more mags, solid stock and a soft case then sold it a year or so later for $3600 ... haven't regrett it yet ...

The only bad thing about choosing a Kimber ...
... there are so darn many models to choose from!

Weatherby Athena OU for $750. I don't remember the grade but it was not the Athena III. I want to say Grade IV Field. Turns out it was worth $1800 in the used condition it was in. I traded for several other guns.

I have purchased a number of guns, but I think the one I made the best deal on was the 1911A1 that I bought for Classic... I had been looking for one for him for a long time, but they were so high in price...
Well they say good things come to those who wait and it did..Colt 1911A1 Property of USA..US Army, serial number dates it back to 1944, all original, in very good condition..400 bucks..been offered 2000 for it.. he loves showing that gun off and telling everyone how it was a gift from me...

I found a Remington 700 .300 Weatherby Mag. Stainless, detachable magazine with a Fajen Lamintated stock and a Leupold 3X9X50mm Vari XII. It was shot 15 times, (I later bought all the ammo the person had and that was the number of empties). Whole rig was $600.00.

1979, I was 15. Dealer friend of my dad's sold me a Remington 722 in .308 with an old k-4 weaver, for $110.00. He even took payments I could afford with a paper route income. $20.00 down and $10.00 a week. Being young and very stupid I sold it in 1984 for $125.00. Probably my best buy and my worst sell all in one gun. It was the first gun that was mine with no strings attached. I still search the auctions every week for one to replace it.

Don't know if it was the best deal, but it was one of the first to come to mind. I went to a marina auction where they were going out of buisness and selling all boats. Bought a few. Traded one that I paid $150.00 for a Colt Sauer 30-06. Darn thing was so nice I was afraid to shoot it. Traded it for a 9mm Uzi + extras. Biggest clumsiest most awkward 9mm semi auto I ever shot. Would have been ok in 45 and Class III. Traded that for a Browning over/under 12 ga. + extras. Still have the Citori and it has killed alot of clays since then. The "extras" that were in the deals more than made up for the $150.00 I paid for the boat.

If I knew then, what I know now.

Back in the late '60's, I was visiting with a friend who owned a kennel. Another dog breeder was visiting him, and, for some reason we started talking guns. The visitor said he had an Army .45 buried behind his cottage at a lake in upstate N.Y.

He owned a trucking company, and one day one of the young guys who worked on the loading dock was showing around a pistol. It's said "US Gov't Property", so he was sure it was stolen and confiscated it. The kid didn't protest very much. He didn't know what to do with it, so he wrapped it in an oily rag, wrapped that in plastic, put it in an old ammo can, and buried it.

I told him I'd give him 50 bucks for it, whatever it's condition. Hell, I figured I could get that much out of the parts....even if they were rusty, I could refinish them.

He said he'd bring it with him next time he came over.

A couple of months later, he did. It was a beautiful, unmolested, original Colt M1911 (1918 manufacture date) in 80-90% condition.

    I still have it.....not a bad deal for $50.00.

Ya'll got to get your ears and head tuned up for the South now!! Was sitting at the lunch counter of a little store in Dugwell VA, that's just a little ways NW of Gogginsville, VA which is jut a little SE of CALLAWAY,VA eating a hotdog!! An old black man came in and asked the store owner" MRS. Overfelt, Does you has any 222Magnums?" She replied " No, I've got 243, 270.308and 30-06." He then said, " I wish I could sell this rifle and then I'd go's and buy's me a 243 toshoots them groundhogs." At the time I had a 6x47 with a 26 inch Douglas Air Guage barrel that I shot BR with. Probably had 2000 222Mag cases!! I looked up from my very delicious hot dog and said, " What kind of a 222Mag do you have?" He said, "It's and ol' Remminnton." I said, "Let me see it." It was an original BDL like new with a Leupold 3x9 on it!! I said, "How much does you want for it?" (Not really! I said, "do" just trying to keep you interest up.) He said, I's take 150 dollas fo' it!! I bout' broke his hand taking the gun and handing him the money!!!! Today that action has a 40X barrel on it and will shoot in the ".2s" with about anything you want to put thru it!! If you want to get picky give it 26.5gr. of 3031 and a 52 grain Fowler(NC custom bullet maker) Fed205 seated just touching the rifling and watch the eyes pop open when they measure groups!!! GHD

Best buys I ever had were through the NRA pre '68. I bought a surplus 1911 .45 ACP made by Remington Rand for $14 and an unfired, still in the box 1903 Springfield for not much more then what I paid for the .45. I liked the experience so much, I did it again the next year. One per calendar year was the rule. I'm sure that some of our members remember the deals we used to get through the NRA and DCM before the Gun Control Act of 1968.

Best buy that I sold was a 37mm gas gun. Paid 300.00 and sold it for 3200.00. One of the best that I kept was the DCM .45 for 17.00 in 1961. (Colt 1911 model)
(Pre 1968 GREAT gun buying days)
