It used to be they needed more energy to grow, harvest, refine, and distribute the stuff than it produced but I think that's gotten a little better now.
You might be able to save a little gasoline if you made ethanol from sugar cane, but that would have to come from Cuba, Haiti, or the DR. And, surprisingly, your Congress passed a law prohibiting the importation of sugar cane for the purpose of making ethanol.
And, no one tracks the cost of repairing the damage to small engines due to ethanol in the fuel.
