I just had a friend call me with 2 St Gaudens 20.00 gold coins for sale.
He wants $1600 each.
one is a 1913D and the other is a 1923
He claims mint condition.
Any thoughts on value?
Thanks,
Ed

Latest gray sheet says that these are both common dates. Their main value is the gold. Bid is $1255 in AU condition, this is what a dealer pays. Retail is $1325 in MS60. So, somewhere in that range.

A claim of "mint" condition shows he doesn't understand coin appraisal & pricing.

The going rate for a GRADED St Gaudens of MS-62 or MS-63 would be $1500-1,600. So, at best, he's asking more than the equivalent of MSRP. At worse, the melt value of a circulated coin in nice condition is $1,126.
