School Bonds

We just had a bond vote for the schools here in Fayette County WV. It would have closed some schools and consolidated them. It failed by almost a 2 to 1 vote. One of the main concerns were the bus travel times from the towns with the closed schools to the new school. WV is a mainly rural state and in our area mountainous with narrow curvy roads. The one commute is about 30 miles, not far but with all the stops and winter weather, quite hazardous. The intrusion into family time school activities and personal life is a great deal. How are your systems run in rural and especially the Western states? Thanks.

The school I went to is still the only one in the county. Centrally located a 25 mile bus ride is not unusual. My grand kids go to this school. Most all roads are gravel. snow and mud are problems. The school here at Potter is consolidated with a town 10 miles away. they bus kids both ways. As well as from about 20 miles out in the country. Some day I see these schools closing and kids being bussed 30 miles to a bigger school. Just not enough bodies to keep them open.

The problem I see is when do they stop asking for more money. It seems each year they come back and say we need more money. And the last one that was passed was supposed to get them thru a 5 year period. They normally do not even make it to the end of the 1st year and then say we are out of money and need to cut programs.

I say start firing Administrators and then maybe they will be able to stay within budget.

Our old high school started out as a 1-12. By the time I had gone thru 10 years, it was deemed too run down to repair. So a new high school was built which I did my senior year at. Funny a couple of years later the old buildings were completely renovated and is now full of county offices. Hard to believe we need that many county employees, but that is not even the only county building we have.
Along with a new library and half a dozen more county buildings the new arrivals from yankee land and the illegals are doing very well here. They vote in whatever they want, and raise our taxes to pay for it.

Yep the monies seem to float away like our students. One of the schools burned in 2010 and the board received 1 million dollars insurance. Of this amount, $200,000 went to the law firm handling the case that was already on retainer and the rest floated to other schools instead of rebuilding that school. One school in the valley area has had no football field since it was built. They have to bum fields from other schools or the local college at extra cost. I helped build that school in 1976 and wondered then why no field was built since there was room. No Field- No Answer.

the biggest thing i see, is the constant need to keep upgrading technology. you don't want kids learning computers and such on 10 year old equipment, like what good would that do?? if you want the best education possible for your kids it will cost ya.quote:Originally posted by grumpygy

Its not technology they are upgrading here.

They are using things like Heating cost, Lighting, and even grounds maintenance.

Government schools are indoctrination centers for the left. I proudly vote against every tax increase and any proposal to give government schools more money.

If I had to educate my children: home school.

Mackcrane, if the state wants consolidation they will eventually have it. Lincoln Co. fought it for several years and lost, same thing happened here in Mingo Co. in 2012. I think I know the school that has no football field that you mention, is it the one that uses the WV Tech field? The state will build the school but no athletic facilities. They leave those to the individual communities to provide. Mingo Central would not have a football field if not for the generosity of Buck Harless. They still have no other athletic facilities and use the old ones from the consolidated schools. Tug Valley was formed in 1987 and they are only now in the process of getting all the athletic fields they should have had several years ago.

wolfpack, yep, it's Valley in Smithers. TECH's field is a mess too, no running water, no concession area and the parents & supporters of Valley clean up after the games so as not to pay big bucks for TECH to do it. The people I worked for moved heavy equipment in your area for the mines and to help change the roads. I've hauled in the Logan-Mingo area since 1973 and have seen a lot of improvements made by Buck Harless. What part are you in?

As long as the criteria is designed to socialize the students rather than educate them, you can look for a lot of school elections to fail.

We took our kids out of public school back in the 80s and homeschooled them. Our son has our Grandkids in a private school that cost as much as attending some colleges in order to keep them away from the BS in public schools.

Mackcrane, here in Williamson on the Ky border. My son went to Tech his freshman year to play baseball. He loved the coach but disliked the school. Wound up transferring the 2nd semester to WV Weseleyan to play football. You're right the Tech field is a mess since they dropped their football program a few years ago. Pike Co. in Ky has consolidated and built several new schools over the last few years and they were done right. They all have excellent academic programs and beautiful athletic facilities. I just wish WV would do the same.

Our deal here, Two main high schools both with pools that have repairable fixes. But in the interest of providing a pool that will "fill the need of all students" (read: affluent swim team members) , a multi million dollar bond was issued to build a new indoor competitive swimming pool in a city park.

My question how are kids to take basic swimming lessons when they can't get to the park every day?

Just plain stupid, the existing in school pools are to be filled in at, costing more untold thousands of dollars.
