Stihl FS90 Trimmer Help

I bought a new trimmer today. It came with the 25-2 string head. I never used the string trimmer on my old one. Everything went fine for a while. Now the string has disapeared. I guess I should have tapped it on the ground. Will the string refeed if I fire it up and tap the head. That didn't work on my first try. The owners manual says to refer to the head manual. I didn't get a stinkin' head manual!

Any help appreciated guys,

Hello No it will not I sell Stihl products . you did not tap the head often enough and it wore out right at the eyelet What you will need to do is push in on the round hole on each side of the head this will let the top slide off &up then rewind the string one strand in each half of the spool then replace the top with one string in each eyelet.

It's real easy, jeff, once you've done it one time. Like perry shooter said, press in the holes on the side a the guts will pop out. You'll see the ends of the string. Feed one through each hole. You have to rev the engine as you bump it on the ground, centrifugal force is what makes the string advance. Also, use name brand string. Cheap string will break off at the little holes and then you have to repeat the above. I like the square shape or octagon shape string by Echo. Seems to cut better.
WARNING! Don't beat the head too hard on the ground. My wife broke the shaft off of ours beating it on the ground. (It was out of string, but she is a blonde). They had to replace the whole shaft. Warranty covered. If it doesn't advance after a couple of whacks, take it apart and see what's wrong.

You havae a good dealer to sell the string instead of the plastic fingers Stihl usually tries to sell. The fingers wear fast if your trimming around buildings of fences. They suck.

Personally, I prefer heavy square sting, like the orange or red. They say the red is too large for the FS 90, but it will work.

The FS 90 is a very nice weedeater. Congratulations. It will we a long time before you buy another. Make sure you keep the gear at the end of the shaft greased. Stihl dealers like to sell new shafts because the gear overheats.

Did you get it in the bicycle handles?

I bought a "yard-sale" John Deer, with a warn-out head, for $5. Went to Lowes and got a "universal head". It has 2 yellow buttons on it, u push one in, and slip an8" pre cut string in the hole, and to loops out the other, do the same on the other side, and you're in BINNIS!
Best damn weedeater i ever had. AND it will take 6 other attachments, from an edger, to a 6" chainsaw bar, for trimmin trees

Thanks to all ... you guys are the greatest!

Yes, I got the bike handles. That's what I had on my old (15 yrs+) Stihl that I'm giving to my son.

"My wife broke the shaft off of ours beating it on the ground. (It was out of string, but she is a blonde)." Jim, I hope your wife doesn't frequest this forum!

    Perry,

I see that you're a stihl dealer so maybe you can help. I have the same model as discussed above. Mine is about three months old and has begun vibrating so badly that my hands are literally sore from using it today. It also gets too hot to hold. Any advice? Is a new shaft covered in the warranty?

Actually, Wag, refering to my Stihl FS 90 instruction manual that came with the tool, #0458 260 8621 B, I find on page #28 under "Replacing Nylon Line ..." it states to "Refer to the instructions supplied with the mowing head". Unfortunately those instructions were not supplied.

To all others that were of a real help, I'm happy to say that I'm back in business.

Hello DARBOOTWELL it sounds like either the shaft is bent Or the bushings/bearings inside the tube are worn or missing . With the T27 Torex wrench remove the front head gear box from aluminum tube TWO SCREWS ....now slip out the shaft if solid shaft see if it is bent if laminated shaft Tahe the power head of shaft and look for support bearings and seeif the hole is worn much bigger then the shaft. The Machine should not vibrate that much The Shaft and Aluminum tube complete should not cost that much if you use your old GEARBOX/Head. handles and power head.
