I took a spin down to Springfield, MO again yesterday. The guy that was doing the driving (it was his turn) wanted to stop at the Subaru dealership. I was perusing through the vehicles on the lot and ran across the Subaru Forrester. It is exactly what I want in an automobile. It is roomy and I like the idea of the AWD option. I know it's not the same as a 4WD but it just seemed like a very practical vehicle. I won't be ready for another vehicle for a few years but, if I do get married, it will probably happen during the life of my next car. I've never known anyone that has owned a Subaru but all of the consumer reports that I have read have been positive. What does everyone think about Subaru? Are they as reliable and durable and dependable as I have heard?

I've owned or leased 3 Subarus, all have turned out well. The newer ones are better than the older in many ways, especially power. They work out really well in the snow, but they aren't for heavy off-road use.

I know that this wouldn't be good for heavy off-road use but I think it would be great in the ice and snow during the midwest winters. Most of the older model Subarus that I have seen on the roads rusted out very quickly like the older model Toyotas. Has Subaru made any improvements in this area?

Yes, the older model Subarus had a problem with rusting. I am guessing that the Japanese engineers couldn't believe how much salt we use on the roads. They fixed that problem long ago. When I bought my first Subaru around 1980, I knew of that reputation and I got a special after-market interior surface rust coating. Consumer Reports tells people not to get that, but I think it helped me in that case. The new ones shouldn't need it.

I bought an used (abused) coupe I ran into the ground circa 1980 - 86. Only thing I had go really wrong was the FWD boots / axles got compromised from road salt & the second time I just dumped the thing rather than spend money on it. I was reasonably happy with it.

Like Gordian,I've owned three (1 Brat). No problem now with rusting and they do well in ice and snow.I agree that power is up and resale seems good on used market.Ease of working on is better than old ones.Might want to look at the Outback also. Both nice rides.

I had one and a buddy had one. We both liked them. Have pushed snow with the front bumper to get home.

If I knew then, what I know now.

A friend of mine bought a new Outback in 2000 and he likes it a lot. I think the flat four-cylinder engine is a little under-powered but now you can get them with a flat six. I'm not sure if you can get the six in the Forester. I parked my Jeep Cherokee side-by-side with a Forester in the parking lot one day. The Jeep is bigger but the Forester seems to have more room in the back seat. I'll stick with my Jeep. I really like the 4.0L in-line six.

daddo--The most obvious laugh came from GHD. Hah! That was a good one. I thought I'd certainly start getting shot down for mentioning "Subaru" in a crowd of fellows and ladies that seemingly prefer Chevy's and Fords. I like Chevy's and Fords too but I don't like their cars. It's a personal preference thing.

SXSMAN--I like the outback but the body style of the Forester really grabs me. It looks like more of a cross between an SUV and a Station Wagon.

I've always found it funny that dealers give me this strange look when I ask to see a vehicle with a standard transmission. I guess I don't understand the love affair that Americans have with an automatic. I drove nothing but automatics until I bought my Toyota in 1999 and now I'm in love with standards.

I know a few folks with Subarus and they all say great things.
