Police officer shoots self while training

UNION-TRIBUNE
July 19, 2002

ESCONDIDO - A 14-year veteran of the Police Department was rushed to a hospital yesterday afternoon after he accidentally shot himself in the leg during a field exercise at the police firing range.

The officer, whose name was not released, was taken to the Palomar Medical Center emergency room. Officials said his condition was not considered life threatening.

The patrol division officer was participating in a firearms qualification exercise at the department's outdoor range near Lake Wohlford when he shot himself with his department-issued, 9mm semiautomatic handgun, police said in a written statement. The exercise involves simulated real-life situations. The gun fired as he was reloading.

A police cruiser took him to Lake Wohlford Road and Valley Parkway where paramedics waited to take him to the hospital.

The officer's name was not released last night, police said, because his family had not been notified.

Department detectives and the training division were investigating the incident.
