Anybody here experience tranny probs with a dodge neon??? I can't get mine into reverse. left church sunday and was fine, came home to change into some grubs to go shopping and the bas__rd wouldn't go into reverse. Tranny shop said it was shift cable and i needed two of them @ $200.00 a piece, plus labor. I said labor, not labor pains!! It has other problems and only 80,000 miles so I'm looking for a new car tomorrow, anybody have an opinion of the new ford rangers? I guess i'm trying to ask if i should keep it or toss it?

hey all!

I have always had problems with ford automatic transmissions. If your lookig for a small truck Nissan or Toyota.Even though they arent American they are completely reliable.

If it's a standard try putting in first and let the clutch out a little, then go for reverse. Usually works.

ya, i drove a 2002 ranger and thought it was very weak but didn't put enough miles on it to tell if it was junk or not. I don't need it for strength just good gas and to toss dogs and ol' lady in the back for a trip to the beach.plus the occasional sheet of plywood. Did i say ol' lady/ i meant lawn chairs.

My wifes NEON had to have a rebuilt tranny at, now get this- 37,000 miles! 1000 miles after the warranty expired. In addition to the transmission, we had to have the engine practically rebuilt at 50 something. Biggest piece of crap. Alternator, starter, heater cable, dash guages,. And the worst part was we were still making payments on the thing while it was falling apart. Always thought buying a new car would keep you from sinking money into a vehicle at least the first five years. Still have the care with 93,000 miles, and we are keeping it until the next $1000 repair job. Its been two years since we made that decision.

As pissed off as you are at Dodge, you might not want to go back. But the Dakota w/ the 4.7L V8 is by far the best and most reliable midsized truck. I think right now they even have 0% financing for 60mos.

Fishermenben is right. The Dodge Dakota R/T with the magnum 8 are some hot trucks. It has to be the R/T though go all out.It wouldnt even be bad to pass up on a new truck and get a slightly used one for less money than new.

I lost all respect for Dodge when they stopped making the Torque flite tranny. The trannies in there now are prone to fires and breakdown like no other car company. I have personally seen 3 of those ramm trucks burn to the ground over transmission fires. I also can confirm 2 neons that got toasted. Now with the standard tranny, it's a whole different story. I sure hope they have worked that "flaming" tranny thing out by now.

    Azzeater,
why don't you buy 2 good used cables out of a low mileage wrecked car.Changing a shift cable cannot be that hard.I have worked in the auto wrecking business for over 30 years. There is lots of older cars that still have low milage on them.I have been doing nothing but motors, and transmissions for the last 21 years. We don't do full size trucks,English,or German cars. But we sell parts for American, and Japanesse cars. They all break,i care what anybody sez.I know we sell lots of motor, and transmissions for late model cars. The more complex the motor, the easier they break. Some of worse are the 4.6 Ford, and Cadillac engines. Some of the worse v6 engines are GM 2.8,3.1,3.4.Ford 3.8,and 4.0.Chrysler 2.7,3.0,3.3,3.5,3.8. Motors with 10,000-20,000-30,000 should not be going bad that quick. Most all the late model cars we get, already have had the transmissions replaced.Good luck with your car.

I'm going to look now and appreciate ALL of your comments and will keep them in mind. As for that rodent neon, we have decided to put NO more than 1,000 in to it and sell it. It has been a wonderful car until now. HEY SALZO, what's the deal with those dash guages? I've been so pissed that i wanted to rip that sucker out and REALLY REALLY REALLY had to stop myself. By the way i heard that the neon plant in Belvidere ILL. is laying tons of people off. My buddy said a lot of people in his neighborhood worked there and are selling their homes now.

    hey all!

Im no mechanic, but our Department has bought a few of the Dodge Intrepeds for unmarked cars. They most certainly have more kick than my Crown Vic.But they have had some transmission problems with them.It was the intent to start replacig cars with the new dodge, this may change things I dont know.I got a new car in January,it replaced my Caprice. I would switch back if I could, but it seems as if Dodge has a problem with their transmissions. And it seems to apply to almost all of them.

Rugster were you talking Neons or Intrepids?I have seen departments with the newer Itrepids. If you had a Neon with more kick than your Vic that was one licked Vic.The intrepids are runners though.

If you want a SUV go Chevy Tahoe. If you want a large car go Chevy Impala LS. If you want a mid size car go chevy malibu. Is it hard to tell that I am a chevy man.
