38-55 did the trick

Got back from the black bear hunt in Maine. The Wichester 250 gr fired from the Marlin 336CB did the trick. Bear ran 20 yards and folded. Entered right side behind shoulder and exited left side at the endge of rib cage.

    Ronald,
    We were at North Country Lodge which is located 11 miles north of Patten. Beautiful country up there. This was my third stay at that lodge. I hope to return in 2004 if the good Lord allows it. These people really work to help get your bear.

    Nice up there. My brother had a camp in Mars Hill which is up towards Presque Isle. We have lived, hunted and fished in Maine all our lives. I have also hunted and fished in NH and New Brunswick but I think Maine has the most to offer. If you do not handload for that 38-55 you are missing the boat; the factory ammo leaves a lot to be desired. I am loading a Barnes Original, .377 diameter, 255 grain bullet with 27.0 grains of Reloader 7 in a Winchester case primed with CCI200 primer. Published velocity is 1745 and accuracy is fine.

    The .38-55 is a great cartridge & will deal with anything you'll find in the New England woods 'cept maybe the black flies .

    Thanks, I'll have to try that as I do reload. Sorry for not responding sooner but we got hit with a tornado and myself and every other LEO in the state have been tied up. What a mess.
