It has always been custom that police chiefs are appointed by the Mayor, who is an elected office. This has always worked well as it keeps both men or women in check. If it aint broke dont fix it.

Here in sleepytown, WI the chief of police is a hired position, determined by the town council. Believe the county sherrif though is an elected offical.

On a side note, sleepytown decided it needed to hire a chief with a college degree instead of promoting from within. New chief then came to town about 3 years ago and will most likely be leaving when his contract is up. I believe the council has seen the error in it's ways.

Here in AZ most all of Police Chiefs are appointed by the City Councils. County Sheriffs are elected. The head of the Dept. of Public Safety (AZ Highway Patrol, Criminal Division, State Narcotics Bureau, etc.) is appointed by the Governor Of the State.

In my town (small MO town), Police Chief is a hired (appointed?) position. As are all other officers, their employment is ratified yearly by the Board of Aldermen.

    Sheriff is an elected official.

All the Chiefs I know are appointed. As said before, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

San Angelo, Texas used to have an elected Chief, and it is a fair-sized city. I don't know if that is the way it still is or not.

I believe the tiny town of Nash, Texas has an elected position called City Marshal, that is the equivalent of a Chief of Police.

nashflash could answer for sure if he would.

The police chief of my town in Texas is appointed by the mayor and the city council. The sheriff and constables are elected officials. I'm not sure about the guidelines for police chiefs, but sheriffs and constables being elected officials is constitutional.

Well , with twenty-three (23) years on the job (law enf.) I have never been subjected to an "elected chief" , was even one for a while
(18 mths) myself (was hired into the position), but have worked for several "elected sheriffs" , some good and bad points there...keep us posted.....Thanks !!!!!!!!!!!

In Indiana the chief is appointed by the mayor. I works well but as with anything political you walk on egg shells.
