The BEARS are back, and other critters

I was sitting in my easy chair today, looking out the window and watching the deer graze, while talking with one of my neighbors. Sure enough my neighbor informed me that, once again, the first "reported" sighting of a bear this year, was seen in MY yard. It's OK, except that I am not the one that got to see him/her. This once happened three years (IN A ROW). Don't get me wrong, I do see them, I have a video of me telling one bear to "GET OFF MY HOUSE" which he, in his own sweet time, finally decided to do. That was the third time he had been on the roof. I did not like it much yesterday when I had to clean up the mess the raccoon made out of the trash bag I accidentally left outside. But it was my own fault. A friend, that just moved here, said his cat had dragged in a big rat. I told him there were no rats here, and to describe it to me. As it turned out, it was a vole. His daughter, who was driving home last week, had to slow down to keep from hitting the mountain lion that was crossing the road, to get to his/her mate, who was waiting on the other side. At least now we know why the mountain lion crossed the road. At the right time of year I drive down the canyon, look out over a field and see 50 or more head of elk (with some BIG bulls) standing around grazing, like they own the place. Of course as far as I am concerned, THEY DO. The rock chucks are making a den under one of the culverts that the creek goes through, which I don't fish in, but a few people down the road, who do fish this creek, have pulled out some pretty good sized trout. I fish the reservoir that is 20 minutes away, that does not allow boats on it. As the story goes, there were some divers that were hooking up a cable to pull out a car, that some kids had drove into the lake. When they came out they said they would never go back in that water, there is fish in that water that are bigger than they were. Some people think they have to duck when they are outside in my yard, but I inform them I have never actually been attacked by any of the hummingbirds. They just fly close enough that you might think you are being targeted. You don't leave the window, by the feeder, open at dusk or you will have to escort a hummer or two back outside. The wild turkeys don't come around my house, they stay over the hill from me, near where I have seen the pheasants, and blue grouse. Sometimes I think of the people in the cities, some of which have never even seen a live cow, and I do not have any trouble remembering why I live here. Sorry just a rambling thought.

If I knew then, what I know now.

We are in touch with nature on our farm. We don't have some of the critters you have, but for Missouri we ain't got it too bad. It is a chore for me to go out to the car for work each morning....as I sit in the car and look out across our lake I ask myself...am I going to start the car today? I work in Columbia and that gives me more than enough "city life". The 50 miles I drive home allow me to wind back down to 'paradise speed". Ain't it grand?

Like in the NFL, defense is the key.

Got black bears out at our farm. Darn things ripped part of the deck off the house while we were gon for the weekend. Must have been after a cat or something.

When Clinton left office they gave him a 21 gun salute. Its a damn shame they all missed....

Pic, Is there a bear season where you are. I'm paying out 1,100 to hunt in Maine this Sept. I'll give you 200 bucks to let me sip an RC on you deck and double tap that ole bear. How bout it?
