Now you're talking my language. I used to raise quail and pheasants for my own use. Nothing big. Just a couple hundred at a time. Started out with those Chinese quail and them sent off to Georgia for some Bobwhite eggs. Then raised some Valley and Gambels quail. I loved it.

The fellow that got me into it, gave me an 100 egg incubator, 100 eggs, 2 roosters and 6 hens, in a years time I had a coop full of breeders, and was turning about 1000 loose every fall.

Not to mention the fine meals I had

Classic.....Thats similar to the way I got into it. My wife brought home an incubator she bought at a yard sale. I used to turn a few loose every so often behind my house near the river. Now, years later, there is still a nice size covey of Valley quail to watch and feed.

I hatched in an incubator about 2 dozen,I was going to turn them loose on some Property I own.And I had a good hatch rate but those things would peck at one until they pecked him to death.Im talking when they were maybe two weeks old, then they would start on another. They killed one another off until I had one quail left.I had them in a large cardboard box, someone told me that was why they did it,because they required more space. If anyone can give me a tip I would try it again, quail are very rare in VA for some reason. But I know where I can buy the eggs, sure would like to hatch some.

    Best!!

rugster.....the same thing happened to me. I had them in pretty large areas and they still pecked each other. The answer is a little device similar to hog rings. They sell them at the game farms where you get the eggs. The ring clamps on the beak and prevents them from closing their beak completely. Then when they peck it isn't that destructive to the other birds. The ring doesn't prevent them from eating or drinking. On the pheasants, I used some plastic "spectacles" that clamped in front of their eyes and they couldn't look straight ahead. This kept the birds from pecking also. Another method they use is to trim the upper beak back a little to prevent the pinching action. Weird but true.
