Just brought home my newest toy,a Savage Model 12VBSS. Got it in .308 for big varmints(if you know what I mean). It is a thing of beauty with a fluted stainless heavy barrel and laminate stock. Can't wait to put a scope on it and take it to the range.Have never owned a Savage before.I thought it was a good buy.My wallet could not handle a similar Remington or Winchester.I hope it is as accurate as a friends Tactical Savage. He tells me he gets a 3/8 in. group at 100 yards.I don't think he would lie to me.How about it? Do any of you have similar results?

Savage is the most accurate out of the box rifle on the market. Period!!! Best buy for the money also. They may not be the purtiest...but they do shoot. I have a couple and would put their accuracy against any remington 710 or model 70 ranger made. As far as that goes...against any 700 or 70 made also. swede

Bushy ar,you actualy mean bvss, I looked at taht one for a long time but when I handled it I didn't like the wundhammer palmswell. So I went with the 12 fv,26" syn. mine is in 22-250 and when I was breaking in the barrel I was shooting dime groups and always had 2 touching. I can't wait to start playing with the reloads.

Don't forget the Savage 24. Definitely a very cool gun back in the 50's and 60's when I was growing up. Lot's of non-gunlovers owned one around here on the farm in N. IL. Agun really was used as a tool back then and it was a good choice foer a farmer who was only going to fire a box of shells every decade or so. Personally I think the .410-22 combination is under priced by the Blue Book cuz when they're priced under $200 they seem to sell real fast. Nothing like siting real carefully with the .22 and having the shotgun barrel go off cuz you had the selector on the wrong seting!!!!

My FVS in 22-250 has never seen a factory round. It's first group out of the box, after one fouling shot, measured 3/8" at 100 yards. From there it's gone down. Just one rough hole now, kinda hard to measure. Most work I have done on it is on the trigger. About an hour of tweaking. Two pounds that feels like one pound.Heavy, but it's a varmint laser.

Lastnight I typed a big long post, about the 340 Savage, and how it was the first Savage to have that barrel/receiver lug nut designed by Nick Brewer,a long time Savage employee....and how Bill Ruger hired him out of retirement, and how many ruger rifles are simular to Savage rifles...and on,and on......then my mother in law called, and I lost my connection and my post.....DAMN DIAL-UP....mother inlaw called about some unimportant crap like.....well,it was a hell of a lot less important than Savage Rifles, that`s for sure!.218

Homer, .218, I'm glad I'm not the only 340 fan. You dont see too many around, or here many people talk of them. My .222 is incredibly accurate. I havent shot the .30/30 yet. I gave my very good friend and neighbor the other 30/30, cause he will use it more than me, I'm sure, and I just like him, good neighbors are so nice to have. His is pretty accurate too.

Homer, here we go again!!That 340 in 225 Win would be a nice rifle to have. I saw towards the back of Numrich,a side mount for $17.?? regularly $29.??for the 340..218

    Among my boltguns are 7 M-23s and 2 M-20s.3 of my M-23s are 32-20s..a bolt action 32-20 is a nice thing to have!Those M-20s are the coolest lookin` gun ever..very slender,with a shnable forend,5 pounds,14 ounces.Back then,in the 20s and so on,it was all Winchester,and Remington could do to keep Savage in their sights..218

.218, I have one of those very side mounts on my .222. It works, but... I had to put shims between the mount and the receiver on the front of the mount, due to the mount naturally pointing so far to the right. You cant see the shims, and they stay put, but it kind of nags at my quest for perfection. I broke one of the mounting screws trying to put it on, cause the holes were not drilled exactly as they should have been in the mount. I had ordered two of the mounts, so I just used a screw from the second mount. I never used the second mount, so it doesnt really matter that its one screw short. Depending on how your stock has been cut from the factory, you may have to alter the stock to get the mount to fit, or else it will not go on. One of mine will take it, but the other would have to be altered slightly, just food for thought. RyanIf you want one to check out I can send you mine to look over, let me know, seriously.

Ryan, are those mounts they sell, one piece mounts..I`ve been wondering about that..I hate the thought of 2 or 3 piece.I`m the same as you about that perfection stuff..it eats away at me if it ain`t right.I had one in 222,had to make a front mag guide..thingy.It worked perfect, but it ate at me cause it wasn`t original,so I sold the rifle for $365.at a show..that`s a lot, down here.Got my eye on one in 223 now...when will it ever end?.....I guess we all know the answer to that. .218

Robs and .218...yes the .225 is probably the rarest of them all. The 30/30 hasn't any checkering, the .225 and the .222 have different checkering patterns. Nice wood with light scuffs and a few minor scratches on both with 95% blue and all three have side mounts. Going to hand them down to the Kids and then grandkids. Just missed a 342 in 22hornet. Dang!

Its a one piece mount, not counting the 2 pieces that serve as scope rings, so to speak, but yes, its a one piece mount.

Ryan,I`ve had 340s that were tapped differently, took the sidemounts off of a hornet, and a 222,to work on both, then figured out I wanted to swap scopes,so I tried to just swap mounts and all,but they would not interchange..tapped differently. Are the ones you got from Numrich Weavers..and are they blued steel?.218

Hey 218, I got a twinge of jealousy seeing your note on your M20s. Ya see, I sleep with mine. It sure is hard to find one that hasn't been messed with. One real nice one has a 24" barrel, probably off a 99. One has a 20" shortened barrel and decent * stock and no butt plate. One is a perfect 22" barrelled action, no stock, trigger guard or magazine. All these in 250-3000. The other is barrelled in 22-250, just got it for the action parts. I keep ordering the stock, etc. but they never come thru. Too bad they made them for such a short time, just no parts out there. Great little rifle!Actually I'm not really a Savage fan. I only like the 19NRA, 19H, 23A, 23B, 23C, 23D, 40, 45, 340, 1920/26 and 99.Those varmint hunters with their 22-250s haven't lived till they hit a groundhog at 80 yards with a 25-20 or 32-20 and hear that "crack - - - - whop".If you ever find a junker with a good stock I'd sure like to hear about it.Sure nice to know I'm not the only one who has the hots for the M20s.I.Shutehaywire27@webtv.net

Fellow Savages,The only bolt of their's I have is a 340 in 222 and I have the same shim problem as Rob. AAMOF I didn't use enough shim and need to do it over. But along with the 340, 2-99F's in 308 and a 219 in 3030 (so far) show my 'faint' interest in Savages. Now if they made a 110 in 358 or 35 Whelen, well I'd jes hav'ta have me one o' them too.

    .218-I tried a couple stamped base/ring mounts and couldn't shim them enough. Got a Weaver #1 from Midway for a 340 30-30 and it works fine.Oh, yeah, I forgot a couple 24s and a 28 shotgun that I like.I'll check out that picture.IS

218 or anyone,Is there different varieties of mounts for the 340 series? The rings on my mount sit slightly to the right as if it belongs on a larger receiver like maybe a 3030. Who sells them so I can try another one? Thanks.

billyb:We must have the same mount,`cause mine is way to the right, axactly as you said, like it fits a wider receiver.I`m gunna check out the one I.Shute suggested on his post above...I`ve had 340s with Weavers and I think B-SQUARE,on a hornet.and a .222,and they would not interchange...but now that I think of it,I have an old one in 30-30 I`ll try this one on..`cause it sure don`t fit the .223.I`m wondering if the 30-30 receiver is wider,..I doubt it but who knows?.218

I JUST BOUGHT A 333T TRAP GUN IN NEW CONDITION,THE 330 WILL BE HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS LESS MONEY.I WAS VERY DISAPOINTED WHEN I GOT MY GUN,ALTHOUGH IT WAS IN NEW CONDITION I TOOK THE STOCK OFF & FOUND OUT IT WAS REALLY A 330 MODEL STAMPED 333T.YOU CAN TELL BY LOOKING AT THE TOP TANG,IF THERE ARE TWO BOLTS & WHEN YOU TAKE OFF THE SHOLDER PAD THERE IS NO BOLT HOLE IT IS A 330.OTHER THAN THAT IT SHOOTS GREAT.GOOD LUCK WHIZ630
