If you are FFL and are shipping to FFL, you may use the mail. Ask for a form to fill out at the post office. If you are not FFL and shipping to FFL you have to use a common carrier.

Legally you must ship only to the adress listed on the FFL. I would also verify the FFL through the BATF website. CYA

IPL is right. You must ship to the address on the license. But what if there is a physical address and a P.O. box on the same license? In that case, I always ship to the P.O. Box or I will put both addresses on the carton, knowing that USPS will send it to the box since it is easier.

In some small towns, there is NO residential delivery, or the physical address may not be on a mail route. In that case, the only option is to use a P.O. box.

You don't need to be an FFL to ship a long gun to a FFL in another state by US Mail. You do however need to be an FFL in order to ship a hangun to another FFL in another state by US Mail. There is no form to fill out to use the USPS to ship firearms other than a Merchandise Receipt Form that will have to be signed for on the other end.

One of the qualifications of having an FFL is to have a place for walk in business, which can be open for inspection should the ATF want to check records. I do not think a firearms 'maker' would ship to PO nor would a wholesaler, nor would a they ship a gun back after repairs to a PO. How can one "conduct" business from a POSTS OFFICE BOX? UPS won't deliever to a PO box, try it and tell them you want a signature from the receiver... An FFL business in a small town outside of town will have a shipping address such as 'rural route..." This sound smelly to me...I'd be making phone call's to your local ATF

I ship firearms and receive firearms to a PO box on a weekly basis. My home is my business location. Street address and PO address are both on the FFL. I refuse to do service with a business that wants to send things by UPS second or first day air because of the simple fact that there is no such thing where I live. Takes 3 days to get a Next day air package and 3-4 days for a second day ait. At least with the PO when something is shipped Express Mail and not delivered on the day it is supposed to be delivered, I can get a refund on the postage. Try that with UPS or FedEx.

Aglore there is a distinct difference between a address with "just" a PO (billy bob, PO 69, Kansas city, Kansas) versus your shipping to as you wrote a; "Street address [and] PO address [are both] on the FFL" Billy Bob, PO 69, 112 So. 99th Str. Kansas City Kansas...don't you think? With a specific address it means ATF can come in during regular business hours and check records...and like I said how can ATF do that at a POST OFFICE BOX in a Federal building...

Michael, your going to have to read what you write.

quote:I do not think a firearms 'maker' would ship to PO nor would a wholesaler, nor would a they ship a gun back after repairs to a PO.

I'm just refuting what you said as I only receive items through my PO Box. No home delivery here for Mail. It doesn't exist. Every business in Bethel get it's merchandise by Mail, even the grocery stores and that includes Frozen products, meat etc; It all comes by Mail.

Aglore, I think you are going to have to explain Bethel to them.

Nowhere on Form 4473 for a PO Box number. But what the heck does that have to do with shipping firearms by Mail?

Federal Firearms regulations Reference Guide 2000: page44, 1st column, Paragraph heading: BUSINESS PREMISES..."The property on which the manufacturing or importing of firearms or ammunition or the dealing in firearms is or will be conducted. A private dwelling, no port of which is open to the public, shall not be recognized as coming with in the meaning of the term". According to the agent I talked with here in Nebraska -10 minutes ago and I will narrow it... down paraphrase it: a "PO" does not fit the regulation of a Premises... So if your getting shipments to a PO...ya might wanna do some digging...

Aglore.."Nowhere on Form 4473 for a PO Box number. But what the heck does that have to do with shipping firearms by Mail?" you are getting closer to sending me a Moose steak either that or I am getting closer to send you a corn-fed Filet... the thought of a Moose steak sure make's my mouth water and I just might have to fly up there and eat it infront of you..thinking about coming up there next summer anyway...heheh..LOL.

Michael, of course a PO box is not a business. But the BATF does say how or to what address you are/can receive firearms. The street address is there so they know where to come knocking on your door when they want to. Maybe you should call that Agent up again and sort of clarify what this this thread is about. Shipping Firearms by Mail. Or where is it that you can receive your firearms. Must it go directly to your business premises or picked up at the PO and then taken to your Business premises. I have $500 cash money that says the way I receive firearms is legal. Any takers?
