Traveling Vietnam Memorial coming to my town.

Has anyone seen one of these traveling replicas of the Vietnam Memorial Wall?

The traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial is coming to my town in two weeks. This is a 4/5 scale replica of the "Wall." It will be on display from July 17th thru July 21st and play a part in our town's centennial celebration. The organization that travels around the country displaying this memorial likes to have it escorted into town by a bunch of motorcyclists so I volunteered to organize the escort. I've been talking to the Washington ABATE chapters, the local HOG club and a couple of Vietnam Veterans motorcycle clubs. With any luck we'll get a few hundred bikes to lead the procession into town. The local cops will meet us and block intersections so we can travel through town without interruption by traffic lights.

I'm really pumped-up about it. Any GunBoard members from Washington State that are interested, it will be on display in Burlington, 24 hours per day, for 5 days starting Wednesday, July 17th. There will be a ceremony Saturday evening along with a fireworks display. If any Washington folks would like to ride in the escort, just ask and I'll pass along those details.

If you have never seen it, it is something to behold.

I saw it once and I dont know if I could bear to see it again, too many of my friends names there, and to those that were there it leaves a hole in your heart. And but for the Grace of God, my name could be there.

Give them a salute for me when you see it.

You can absolutely count on it, Airborne.

    YSACRES:

Tuesday evening, July 16th, 6:00 pm, we'll meet the truck carrying the wall at the Interstate-5 northbound rest stop at Smokey Point in Snohomish County. This rest stop is about 15 miles north of Everett, WA. Probably get formed up and leave there by 6:30 pm. Ride north on I-5 to Burlington, exit the freeway at the Hopper Road off-ramp where we'll meet up with the Burlington Police. They will escort the whole group through town to the Burlington park where the memorial will be set up. The crew will assemble it on Wednesday morning and it will be open to visit 'round the clock until Sunday evening, July 21st. They'll pack it up on Monday and head out for Oregon.

That would be great if you could make it over here for the ride, man. If not, maybe just come over to see it sometime during the 5 days it'll be here. Give me a call if you think you might get over the hump to the wet side.

My father took me to that travelling replica when I was younger. That was the closest he ever made it to the real Memorial Wall. I've seen both, and they both bring a lot of emotion to everyone that sees them.

Hats off to all the Vietnam vets, those that are on the wall and those that made it home.

    E. Williams: This memorial is known as the American Veterans Traveling Tribute (AVTT). Check out their website and schedule at www.avtt.org

According to their schedule, they will be in Tallassee, Alabama on Nov. 7th thru Nov. 11th of this year.

Have any of you seen the paintings done of men at the wall looking at "reflections" of their buddies in the wall?

There's on of a man in a suit leaning against the wall with one hand while covering his eyes with the other. The "reflections" are looking at him, and one is reaching his hand up to touch the man's hand.

Rips my heart out every time I see it.

Have a cold one for me for Willie, who didn't come back, and Hank, who left an arm and most of a leg there. His name isn't on the wall because it took 20 years for that mine to kill him.

30 years in the reserves next month. Time to hang it up.

UPDATE: The wall is now in town and open for viewing. We did the motorcycle escort up the freeway and into town this past Tuesday evening and had a great turnout. More than 800 bikes! Stretched down the road for over 2 miles with the truck & trailer carrying the wall right in the middle.

The wall is open 24 hrs/day and is illuminated at night. I went down there last night about ten o'clock and there were a lot of people on site.

Airborne and Rickstir: I'll be giving your friends on the wall a first-class salute tomorrow night after the ceremony.

It has been to Omaha; when it was here I went at night time...there were quite a few who appeared at the WALL with me in the darkness.
