Negotiate with a big retail store?

Saw a Colt I wanted at Cabela's in another state. Asking $1599 I thought it worth $1400 and offered that much via email. Anyone tried this before? Think Cabela's will entertain offers or is it "Price is firm?"

    Yes. I've bought 2 firearms from Cabela's Gun Library and I didn't pay their asking price on either of them.

    My mother used to negotiate with Bloomingdales and Macy's when I was growing up.

    The woman refused to pay retail.

    Of Course, all they can do is say no and if they do say no, ask them why they are saying no. A no is the first stage in a negotiation.

    Paid half of what they were asking for a 1903 with the Pederson cut.

    Didn't get a great deal, mind you, paid about what it was worth.

    Can usually talk them out of a couple percent if I pay cash.

    On the other hand, if they are asking what I think to be a fair price, I'll usually pay it.

    They will deal. I bought my Raging Bee from them for an offer 200 dollars less then they were asking. They are great like that. They just want to sell and will be good to you. They also give great prices on trade ins.Oakie

    It depends on the item and the promotion behind it. On full retail items most places will listen to reasonable offers.

    If they were to say, "The set price is firm and we do not negotiate", then you have your answer and there is no need to waste any more time.. Go elsewhere.

    I just closed a deal on two very nice M1s and managed to negotiate the price for the pair down from $2200 to $2025 by simply making an all cash offer. $175 is nothing to sneeze at.

    My dad tries to negotiate at Walmart.

    It is comical to see the expression on a Walmart high school kid part timer who don't give a crap when my dad offers 1/2 price on some obscure item

    Yes Cabelas with entertain offers. Your best bet is to call the library and talk to who ever is in charge.

    They may be willing to negotiate on guns in the library. Depends on how long it has been sitting there.

    I sent an email. My offer is $199 below their asking price and I think that's a reasonable offer

    I got Gander MT to do a buy 4 and get the 5th one free when I was buying Leatherman Supertools for Christmas presents one year. All I had to do was ask the store manager. Just make sure you are dealing with someone who can say yes. There are lots of peons in the way who are only authorized to say no.

    I did talk Walmart out of some $$ once. Walmart.com showed one price and the price tag in the store was about 15% higher. I showed them the internet price and started to whine just a little, they knocked off the difference.

    I've been to Cabellas in PA with NJRETCOP a couple times and watched him haggle a couple guns and get a better price.

    I know a fellow who does not pay full retail about 50% of the time. Jeans from The Gap, a water heater at Lowes, he often gets a few (or a whole lot more than a few) bucks off. What impresses me with him is the way he does it: he's a super nice fellow and goes through the negotiation in a super nice way. Just chatting, a polite inquiry, a little more chatting, and the bill just went from $50 down to $38.

    He's persistent, always asks, is a good customer who spends a lot of money, and makes it easy on the manager: "Hey, I've been in here a few times this week and I've noticed this saw just sitting here. I can't do the asking price, but at X I could get it off your shelf. Could you please help me out?"

    They sometimes negotiate.
    I bought a Browning A-Bolt 375H&H at our local Cabelas a few years ago. They were asking $1175.00 for it and they took $100.00 off. I bought it, took the Swarovski scope off and sold the gun here on GB for 1150.00..........
    2 weeks ago, I was looking at a decent H&R 22 Sportsman and they wouldn't budge on the price. Go figure. I think a lot has to do with how long they have had it on their shelf.

    They will deal! Bought a s&w model 25-11 outta Lone Tree CO and transfered to WV. Got it for "a hunnerd" less than listed. Went outta their way to make things easy on both ends!!

    Absolutely.

    Being an old retired fart I have more time than money.

    Was looking into buying a one person pontoon boat and cruised the Sportsman Warehouse and Cabelas. Local builders of these boats also visited: Bucks Bags and Areins.

    What I liked was the Bucks Bags boat cause it had a SS frame. Sportsman Warehouse had one that they had for almost 2 years. Currently marked down about 50%. Talked to the manager and showed him that stuff was missing. He discounted it down another 50% and I paid cash.

    Made the missing part myself, also made improvements. Took the improvements over to Bucks Bags and they threw in free parts in trade for the ideas.

    Worked out well for all concerned. Now I will be visiting Alpine lakes only accessible by ATV to fish this season. It's more like catching, than fishing.
