pulley measurements

Hello folks,
I am restoring an old Craftsman jointer. I picked up a 1/2 hp electric motor. A reprint of the old manual calls for a 5" pulley for a 1/2" V belt. How are these pulleys measured? Is it the diameter, circumference or something else

Edit: Thanks for the information, so a 5" pulley would have a 4 1/2" OD diameter if the belt is 1/2". The guy at the hardware store doesn't know how to measure pulleys.

No, the pulley diameter is the largest diameter. In otherwords, if you wanted to know the diameter of a pulley for a 1/2" belt, you would lay the belt in the pulley and measure the diameter over the top of the belt.

The velbet is measured at the widest width, not the thickness. Most 1/2" belts are 1/2" wide at the widest point, and about 5/16" at the thinest point and about 5/16 wall thichness.

Here is everything, and more, that you could want to know about pulley, sheaves, and belts:
