Officer shoots himself in foot
GILLETTE, Wyo. (AP) - A police officer shot himself in the foot during a firearms qualifying test at the local Division of Criminal Investigation office, according to Police Chief Ric Paul.
The Casper police officer, a member of the Central Wyoming Drug Task Force, started having problems with the handgun and went inside to work on it Wednesday.

Paul said the gun went off accidentally. The bullet went through the officer's foot and lodged in the carpet.

The officer's identity was not released.

All law enforcement officers are required to do firearms proficiency tests several times a year.

That was how the gun battle at Mount Carmel began.

Pathetic!!!!! There is no such thing as an "accidental" discharge in general. It is either intentional or, more commonly, negligent. Rarely does a gun go off by itself which would constitute an accidental discharge. Not intending to fire is not an accident it adds up to negligence/stupidity.

GET A CLUE KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNLESS YOU ARE READY TO ENGAGE SOMETHING!!!!

You really have no clue about this? On a large department, an accidential discharge takes place about 1 every 1.5 years. Most are without injury or serious property damage. I have seen the roof of a patrol car with a hole in it. I have seen lockers with holes, flooring with holes, clothing with holes. S**t happens.

    Alpine,

Absolutely I have a clue about it. I have seen things like this way too many times in my career. I just refer back to my original post i.e. unacceptable/inexcusable.

Just another example of why cops should not be exempt from gun control laws, and madatory testing to qualify to carry.

Cops was filming in this area a couple of years ago when they took a pump shotgun out of a gunrack in a truck, when the officer was trying to clear it the thing discharged and ricocheted off the pavement and struck the camera crew about the shin area, I'll bet that's one episode you won't be seeing soon...

A police officer, supposedly proficient with a firearm, didn't unload his piece before working on it ? Unexcusable violation of rule # 2

Ya know, some people just dont get it. When it happens to you, and you were in no way at fault, and you have someone saying things about you that arent true, you will eat your words. Dont judge this police officer when you dont even know a thing about the incident. When judging people without hearing the evidence, it use to be called a lynching. There is a reason why we dont lynch people. I'm never gonna get this smiley thing right!

496: It happens all the time. Last four accidental discharges I was aware of: One was promoted to Captain, another promoted to Lieutent, the next two promoted to Sargent.
We wont't even discuss the one that found a human skull, with a bullet
hole in it, with a bullet rattleing around inside, lost the skull, found the skull but with the bullet now missing, before placing it into evidence. Promoted to Captain.
