Carry Permit Renewal

What a refreshing experience to renew my carry permit today. I freely walked into the court house (no guards, check points or metal detectors), found the sherrif's office, filled out the form, paid my fee and was handed my new carry permit by a congenial deputy after an instant check.

The last time I renewed my carry permit, 5 years ago, I was living in another PA county which required you to jump through hoops for a routine renewal. Some parts of PA are still free afterall.[:)]

The wife and I went to the nearest MS Highway Patrol station yesterday to renew our license. They expire on March 25, 2008. Four (4) year license.

Went through the finger printing (again), background check (again), submitted the notarized documents (again), paid the $82.00 apiece, had our picture made and received our license.

Just before leaving, I noticed an expiration date of March 25, 2011 on mine and my wife's new license. Three (3) years, not 4. Returned to the counter for an explanation. I told both women at the counter that 2008 plus 4 years was 2012, not 2011.

One decided that she needed to call the Dept. of Public Safety in Jackson, MS to check it out. She was informed to "remake" the new license with an expiration date of 2012. Then she admitted that she was certain that other licenses she had previously renewed had a 3 year expiration date. No one had brought it to her attention. DUH!

It's sure not that easy in Texas. We make it a marathon, physically and financially to get permits the first time, then again when they are renewed. It shouldn't be that way.

    My humble opinion,

Here I just return the reminder post card from the Sheriff's Department with a copy of my permit and $10 in the mail, and about a week later I receive my new permit, in the mail.

I live in Pa. and I am an ffl dealer and as such I go through to same process as anyone else. We must reapply for our permit and wait for an approval the same way as an individual who has never had a permit in the past. This includes two indivuals who must fill out forms stating there is no reason you are not capable of carring a firearm and will act in a sane manner if the time to use the firearm would occur. I am also a LE officer which exempts me from going through the process but have keep the permit current so I will have a record in the database they have in the event I do retire. Just my 2C.

I wish a happy and heathly New Year to all of you!!!

I guess I shouldn't gripe too much about the process here in Texas. At least it's comforting to know that those with a CHL are capable of handling a gun and hitting their target.

The last time I renewed, it required a full day in the classroom complete with test to make sure I paid attention, and a 50 round qualification. Then I had to send $70 (if I recall correctly) to the State.

And I can look forward to doing it again in 4 years.

SG&A , INC. I am surprised that a retired LEO would be required to obtain a carry permit. Here in Kalif. it is required by law that a retired LEO is issued a CCW, if honorably retired.
They are however getting cheap around here. They used to buy us lunch every four years and issue us new retired IDs. But the last one I got I had to go downtown to the personal office and get a new one. Fortunely there were a couple of Lts and Captains I ran into while there and they took me out to lunch. I suppose that made the drive down the hill worthwhile.
