It's Official - I'm Old...

edited June 2008 in General Discussion
My 50th birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks. The big 5-0.

I hadn't really thought much about the milestone until I went to the mailbox today. There in the box was the Grim Reaper staring at me without emotion.

AARP sent me an application form, as I am now eligible![B)] As DWS might say, "Dire news indeed!" The old folks club is ready to make me a member.

After getting over the initial slug to the gut, my cheap side kicked in and I began to wonder if I should join.

Any of you fellers members? What do I get for $12.50 per year? Is it worth it?

Hurry up and answer before I forget I asked the question...

Well, you've got a little ways to go before you can officially proclaim to be old! With that said, welcome to the downhill side of life!!! [:D]

I believe you can get some decent discounts through AARP, but I couldn't accept their views as an organization, so for me joining wasn't going to happen.

If you can't feel the music; it's only pink noise!

Take heart old codger, AARP started trying to get some folks money when they hit 35. So, you must, in reality, be only 35. You can laugh at them for the next 15 years, but whatever you do, don't join.

You made it! when i turned 50 last month, they had a big surprise birthday party for me at work. I had lots of fun and it was great. when they asked for a speech, i simple told them that while 5-0 to most folks was dreaded, i truely welcomed and celebrated it, because there had been several times in my life i didn't think i would make it 50 seconds longer.

Enjoy it Counselor - you earned it! Congrats!

AARP is anti-gun and a major supporter of the "Brady Bunch". They'll never get a dime from me. [:(!]

For more than a decade, AARP has supported federal measures to control the
availability of handguns because of their frequent use in the commission of
violent crime. Handguns continue to present a serious threat to citizens of
all ages. In 1993, over 13,000 people were killed with handguns. At least $1
billion is spent annually on medical costs associated with the treatment of
    individuals who have been shot.

The prevalence of violence in some neighborhoods has resulted in many older
persons becoming virtual prisoners in their homes. Increasingly,
individuals living in the inner city are suffering the loss of children and
grandchildren who are the victims of violent crimes and senseless shootings.

Further, the lack of restrictions on handgun sales in certain states enables
gun runners to purchase guns that they can then resell in states with more
restrictive laws. This lack of uniformity among the states significantly
undermines their ability to control handgun availability.

Increased criminal activity involving automatic and semiautomatic weapons
persuaded AARP in 1989 to expand its earlier gun control policy to include
these weapons. This policy now reads as follows:

"The federal government must continue to control the availability of
handguns and semiautomatic and automatic weapons because of their frequent
use in the commission of violent crimes. The expiration date for the
requirement for a five-day waiting period in the Brady Bill should be
eliminated. The assault weapons ban should not be repealed."

AARP supported both the Brady bill, passed in November 1993, and the assault
weapons ban, which was included in the 1994 crime bill. The Brady Bill
institutes a waiting period of five business days for all handgun purchases,
providing time to check the purchaser's background. The bill also raises
licensing fees for gun dealers and requires that police be notified of any
multiple gun purchases. However, the waiting period provision expires after
five years, to be replaced with a nationwide "instant-check" system that
will screen out felons through the use of computerized criminal records.

The ban on assault weapons outlaws for 10 years the manufacture and
possession of 19 assault weapons, as well as copycat models and
semiautomatic guns with two or more characteristics associated with assault
weapons. The measure also bans ammunition-feeding devices that hold more
than 10 rounds. AARP would oppose any proposal to repeal the ban on assault
weapons or weaken the Brady bill.

To assure that AARP policy is consistent with member views, the Association
has polled its members on this issue. The results indicate that AARP
members strongly support stricter gun control measures. A majority of those
responding felt that, in general, the federal government should be "doing
more" in the area of gun control.

When asked about specific options, our members gave the following responses:

? 82 percent strongly favored a federal law which controls the sale of guns,
    such as by making all persons register all gun purchases;
? 79 percent strongly favored a law requiring a license to carry any gun
    outside the home;
    ? 73 percent strongly favored a law requiring a two-week waiting period
    before buying a gun to permit time for a background check;
? 67 percent favored a law which would require a person to obtain a police
permit before buying a gun (44 percent strongly favored this option).

Each of the first three options was opposed by no more than ten percent of
those responding to the survey. In addition, the survey results are
comparable to other surveys of the population at large. In view of this
level of support, AARP reaffirmed its policy on gun control.

Overall, AARP always tries to ensure that policy positions presented before
the Congress, Executive Branch, and state legislatures express the views and
priorities of a majority of our members. Our policy development process is
designed to ensure that the views of our members are solicited and taken
into account. For more information about this process, please visit AARP
    Webplace at:

An opportunity to save a buck here and there on this and that, but mostly you're paying for a lobby to get our lawmakers to outlaw those evil guns.

If we could only get everybody in America over the age of fifty to join AARP, Washington would have to listen to us. We could even outlaw black powder guns and Sarah Brady could finally take a well deserved rest.
The road to hell is paved with COMPROMISE.

When I received my first communication from AARP I sent them a magazine article that exposed their anti-gun agenda and a letter asking to be removed from their waiting list for that reason. I received a letter in which they defended their policy with bogus stats on the dangers of a gun in the home. I still have the letter. THIS from people who say they care about one of the most vulnerable (to crime) groups in society.....

Matty, yer just a pup! I turned 50 last October ... AARP has been after me for at least 10 years and my Mrs makes fun of me every time ...

I've declined several time and it doesn't seem to matter, but don't worry ... they will get more aggressive as time goes by. Yesterday I received a new membership card and a "bill" for my dues ... as usual, I shred-ed the application/bill stuck it back in their prepaid envelope along with the card and let them pay the postage back home.
If you really desire something, you'll find a way ?
? otherwise, you'll find an excuse.

I got that garbage AARP stuff a few years back. I always fill out someones elses name and use the postage free envelope and return it. I do however love the AARP motorcycle cop commercial when she stops the guy to ask for his AARP card. He should get out of the car and do her right on the hood.[:D][:D]

If you want an AARP hotel discount, just ask for it. They rarely ever check for your card. If they do, fumble around in your wallet for a while, especially if they're busy at the desk. They'll just give it to you. It's worked every time for me. [:D]
