Racing great Al Unser Jr. hit in DWI rap

LAS VEGAS - Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser Jr. was charged with driving under the influence after leaving the scene of a freeway crash, police said yesterday.
Unser was arrested after he was identified as the driver of a car that sideswiped another vehicle on the Las Vegas Beltway on Thursday, Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Kevin Honea said.

Unser's vehicle had little damage, but the other car crashed into a cement center median. The driver reported no injuries at the scene, Honea said.

Honea said Unser failed several field sobriety tests before being taken into custody. The 44-year-old Unser was charged with driving under the influence, misdemeanor hit and run, failure to render aid in an accident and failure to report an accident.

Unser is the son of Indianapolis 500 racing great Al Unser and nephew of three-time Indy winner Bobby Unser.

Nobody's perfect. Drunks behind the wheel are responsible for many thousands of injuries/deaths every year. The right thing to do is for the governments to take a really hard stance on this. A strong penalty for the first offense, one more you don't drive for many years. Drunk driving tickets are a joke here in Missouri, if you have the funds you get a not guilty, the system is crooked. I personally know a knucklehead that has gotten 11 drunk driving tickets. He can afford the costs to "beat" them. Should this guy be allowed behind the wheel? The odds are good that he will cause great harm at some time. The only accident I've had was when I got out of the ARMY in Jan. 1970. Was DRUNK with two buddies and totalled my car, and as luck would have it, noone was seriously injured. Learned my lesson, have gotten drunk since, but haven't driven drunk. They get riled up about firearms violence and it's miniscule compared to the carnage wreaked by drunk drivers. Ask any LEO.
