B-17 Flew Over

I was in the horse pasture just before noon when I heard that old unmistakeable rotary engine sound. It flew over my barn only a few thousand or so feet up headed west toward Lake Michigan probably to Oshgosh. I was a little kid when that War ended and I get chills when I see one of those birds in the air. I waved but they didn't wave back.

They do have an unmistakable sound when they fly over. A very wonderful sound.

Just booked two places on the EEA's 'Aluminum Overcast' for its visit here next month.

    One is for me.

The second is for a guy in the crowd who looks like he has the years and the tears to truly respect the ride.

Got a chance to ride in one a couple of years ago. Even paid a little extra to ride in the nose. What a thrill while racing down the runway! I banged my knee twice while crawling up into it. Definitely NOT built for comfort.

What a wonderful idea! I'm sure it will be greatly appreciated.

The Collings Foundation "Wings of Freedom Tour" http://www.collingsfoundation.org/events/category/wings-of-freedom-tour/ was in Spokane June 30 with a B-17G, B-24J, and P-51. Regrettably, since I was merely passing by in a commercial jetliner, I didn't get to see them up close.
I HAVE taken a flight in 2012 in "Aluminum Overcast", another restored B-17G. It was well worth the money and one thing checked off my bucket list.
If you can, go see them. Your admission fee helps keep these beauties flying.

I grew up not far from Selfrige field, and saw a lot of war birds when I was young.I even got a chance to pilot a Corsair back in the 1960s.
Way out cool, and very fast and loud.<1FMJ>

About 2004 I was in the parking lot at work (in Hillsboro, OR) and a silver B-24 flew right overhead at about 150 feet. There was an airport nearby and it was making it's landing approach. It was stirring, but happened so fast I just have a vague memory of it.

Turned out this show was in town for the weekend.

I went and it was more than worth it - though I couldn't afford a ride, which was about $500 at the time.

The best thing about it is that they let you go through the bombers - like a crewman - and get a feel for what it was like. That was terrific.

I'm 6'5" so I had a hard time in places, and couldn't squeeze into the bombardier's position.

It's a wonderful exhibit if you ever get the chance.
