I keep seeing all the different ideas for what is enough gun,,how about using a 177 air rifle ?? I have been doing a litle research on high power pellet rifles as I am wanting one, I thought I had my mind made up on the Ruger Magnum until I saw this now I have to check this one out. These guys have several hunts in here but this is a good one

its all in the shot placement. My only complaint is a younger child on his first hunt WILL experience buck fever. No matter how good he shoots on paper when the buck fever hits the shot can be many inches off, and there is the problem of the small caliber. Not saying a larger caliber missing by a few inches would kill, but it would have a much better chance. Not trying to steal the thread sharpshooter, Rant Off.....

I comfortably used my .22-250 for my only "hog" hunt so far. I would not be comfortable using a air rifle though! [:0]

Must meet the minimum caliber requirement (if any) of the hunting area/district as required by law.

actually air rifles have been used for hunting since the late 1500"s Lewis and Clark had a .46 caliber with them

    ...No.

You can kill an Elk or Deer with a 22lr if you're close enough and shoot them in the ear or eye, but not exactly practical.

Dawn, dusk and nightime for hogs, times that dont offer the best light to be trying to put a shot in an eye or ear, silly idea to me, no offense.

IF you just feel some strange urge to use an air rifle, use a real one, use a serious one, and GAMO aint it.
Use one that can actually kill a hog without using an Annie Oakley feat of marksmanship...[;)]

What FEENIX said, the vermin may be regulated in your State.

Hogs are fair game here, spears, bows, knives, clubs, rocks, use any method you feel froggy enough to use.

Anytime of year, day or night, no season, no limit...they're just a costly menace around these parts...[;)]

A chunky bullet so it won't be deflected by a twig and enough powder to push it through the fat.

I can't believe you folks today!
One wants to use a .22LR on moose and you want to use an air rifle on hogs!
All of you need to wait till your meds kick in!!!!!![:(!]

You have come to the right forum. I have been honing and tuning my Crosman 760 for many years now. I can get one hole with three bbs at 500 yards. It would be deadly on hogs out to 200 yards.

You'd have to switch to specially coated bbs though. I've been using a hexagonal boron nitride compound impregnated into tungsten over glass copper (it's a carbon fiber strengthened copper).

It's a fun gun/ammo combination to shoot. I highly recommend it for your hunt.

    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche

I stand corrected! Never considered that combination. [;)]

Those guns are useless for practical hunting purposes. A fool here bought a .308. It averages less that 800 FPS and cant even punch a hole through a 1/2" thick piece of plywood at 100 yards. The funniest thing I ever saw was an informercial on one of the poaching channels. The guy had one and shot a hog with it. They had to chase the hog for over a mile putting seven or eight more shots into it before he killed it. He looked at the camera and said something to the effect "This is not a typical firearm for hog hunting.. BUT as you see you can kill a hog with a yada yada model yoda air rifle.." I thought.. Y Hell I can kill a hog with a sling shot and hard boil eggs if I shot it enough times.

PS: Here in WV you must use a caliber suited for deer to hunt hogs legally. Which means that you must use..

    A rifle using centerfire ammunition.

A rifle using .25 caliber or larger rimfire ammunition.

A muzzleloading pistol of .38 caliber or larger.

    A handgun using a straight-walled case of .357 magnum
cartridge or larger or a bottle-necked case of .24 caliber or
    larger.

A shotgun using solid ball ammunition.

LOL [:D][:D],,,I thought ya'll would get a kick out of that,,I was raised in a place that had alot of wild hogs,,As a kid I had a big boar put me up a tree after I had put 3 loads of OO Buck in his face.. I am not going hog hunting with a Pellet gun.. I do want a good air rifle for my end of the world kit,,I know I know,,, but I'm going a little nuts as I get older and think it would be neat to have one good enough to take Rabbits and squirrels after the SHTF and save my good ammo for the Zombies.
..Colt,,I shot one of the Quackenbush 50cal air rifles about a year ago. I was impressed at how accurate it was and it poped out there about the same as a 50cal blackpowder rifle,,The downside was it was LOUD , I think a blackpowder rifle would have made less noise,,then you had to charge it every 3 shots to keep its power up and I dont know where after the end of the World you will find something that can pump up 3000# s of air pressure . They say the small calibre ones you can get like 20 shots between recharges [:D]

Calm down, gesshots. It will be OK if the back-up shooter has a Barrett.

Maybe they should try hunting with blank cartridges - worked in Animal House!

D-Day: There WERE blanks in that gun!
Flounder: Maybe he had a heart attack.
    Bluto: Holy sheet!

If y'all get tired of killing them with an air gun, try a dart gun.. and if that gets boring go use a paint gun.. just shoot them in the eye with paint, blinds them so you can run up and choke them to death.
