What is the absolute BEST Vacuum cleaner?

JustCJustC Member Posts: 16,056 ✭✭✭
edited May 2006 in General Discussion
My employees at the stores are destroying vacuum cleaners all the time. I have gone all the way up to the hoover savvy, and after only 1 year, it is dead. What are the best industrial strength vacuums that I can look at to last around here under daily use??

Thanks

Lots of hotels and cleaning services use commercial-grade Orecks. The city maintenance staff uses Panasonics. We use Dawnie's old Bissell. It sucks so well I have to replace the bag nearly every time I use it. I had a homeowner-grade Oreck, and it stayed broken all the time. Kirbys are hard to tear up, but they are heavy and don't clean well. My Kirby is in the garage. Would you like to come get it?

I have a Kirby, and it really "sucks". Damn thing gets the award for weighing the most! Hard to use for old folks.

Dysons have decent suction, but are hard to clean, as they have no bag. Consumer reports would be one place to look JustC.

A friend of mine used to sell Kirby vaccum cleaners and he said they were the best, cause he was selling them. He made about $80k per year(back in the 80s) selling those things door to door to housewives at about $500 apiece.

He used to explain his whole philosophy of selling was based on the looking around the house to see how the housewife kept her house. If she looked like she was the cleaning type, he'd give her the high tech pitch about how the Kirby actually cleans the air in house while you vaccumm.

If the customer looked like a slob, he'd tell her she could vaccumm half as much, only once a month etc. because the Kirby was so efficient.

He would also do the old trick of dumping a bag of dirt/dust/crap on the floor and making a big mess so that the housewife wouldnt dare kick him out until he had done his full demonstration.

Who would suck up the dirt,, the housewife or the salesman[:0] The wife has a commericial Rainbow. I found it in a rental when the tenants left. Nothing like something free.

It's all psychology, the worse the mess looks, the better it's going look when its cleaned up. I've never bought a new vaccum cleaner, I bought a few used ones for a maximum of five buck at a yardsale. Who would pay $500 for a vaccum cleaner?

My friend who sold kirby's would also advise the housewives not to tell their husbands that the machine was on order, but to wait and "surprise" him with how clean the house was before telling him how much it cost.

I've had one of those Dyson "purple animals" for about six months now. They are outstanding for pet hair and removing deep dirt in the carpet but are inadequate for picking up larger crumbs, (I've got four crumb munching children that apparently have to crush everything in their hand before it reaches their mouth) It's not a suction problem but rather the opening to the beater bars/brushes is not large enough.
My wife refuses to allow me to try and fix it with power tools.[V][:(]

Them salesmen are good. They sold a teacher friend of ours one. He came in and got her to make payments on this contraction for 3 years, and gave her a "FREE" room deodorizer. Wow, I was impressed how he done his salemanship... She gove him our name and we had a showing of this marvelous machine. Well he left it with us for the weekend... We cleaned everything , including the vehicles[:D] and gave it back without buying it...[:o)]

What's three years of payments compared to a lifetime of cleanliness, health and happiness for your family?

    NILFISK - (Danish brand...)

Have used one to suck water (not specifically designed to do so), ash and other black crappola from the oil-furnace, metal shavings and all sorts of things...

    It's just impossible to kill.

My Kirby isn't THAT heavy and it's self propelled. It cleans like you wouldn't believe. The salesman gave us the little attachment so I could show people how well it "SUCKS". My parents shampooed their carpets with a Bissel. The we went over it with the Kirby. It picked up soo much stuff that their shampooer and Vacuum didn't. I have bad allergies and we use the HEPA filtration bags. They work great.

I love it and haven't had a single problem since I bought it 4yrs ago. Bags are about $14/3 which will last you about 6-8 months.
Half of the lives they tell about me aren't true.

JustC, the key here is your word, "employee." By very nature they are destructive beasts. You could give them an anvil and a sledge hammer at 8:00AM. By 5:00PM both of them would be trashed, broken and bent beyond use. BTDT, buy a 100 dollar vacuum at Wal mart keep the receipt handy. Let them bust it and keep taking it back for a new one every now and then.

PS; my employees busted my Kirby in three months cleaning a 1,200 square foot office.

Well, I have no clue which is the best, I just use the one furnished by my wife! She buys it, and I use it as much as she does. And, no, she doesn't have to ask me to do it. I've learned it's better to do it before she asks. Otherwise I have a headach until the lump goes down!

mmmmkay, so we have a few votes for Oreck and a few for Kirby. Now, I know the employees will tear up an anvil given a padded room and a spork, but I am trying to find one of those that is easy to maintain as well as tough as nails (you know, like those old 3/4ton trucks with 4 speed trannys and rubber floor mats).[}:)]

Now, ifin you all are saying that not even the high dollar rigs are tough enough, then I guess I should just keep going to the cheap ones and accessing the dumpster when necessary[?]

What about one of the central vacuum systems you see in some of the restaraunts and other business with a lot of carpet throughout. Probably pretty expensive to install but the main unit would be pretty well protected from abuse.

yep, they should be treated as disposable the way they make them now days, 40.00-50.00 bucks at wally world or 800.00 for a commercial oreck, do the math

it would be wise to keep a few hokie mechanical sweepers around, they work well at keep the real vacuuming to a minimum

We bought a Kenmore upright model a little over 3 years ago for $200.00. I bought it at a private run Vacuum store. The owner of the store said the Kenmore, unlike the cheapo DirtDevil and other Wally World vacuums, has steel gears. The cheapo's have plastic gears. A small piece of metal can tear up plastic gears, (such as a thumbtack, small screw from a childs toy, etc.)

We've used the Kenmore at least a couple of times a week for over 3 years. I've replace the vacuum bags, of course. Last week I had to replace the belt. ( 5 bucks)

It's worked real well for us. If it blows up tomorrow, I'll buy another one like it.

    TRISTAR,
bought it over 20 years ago.The salesmen dumped 5 pound of nuts and bolts on the floor.Vacuumed them up,then he opened the lid where the bag is.The opening is about a 6 inch hole. With the lid open and the machine running,he turned the vac upside and the nuts and bolts stayed in the bag without falling out.

My cleaning lady (domestic engineering assistant) uses a Mielhe (sp) and swears by it. Keeps the cat hair down to a minimum and seems to run well off the generator.

I got the Purple Animal super-duper one and it's very easy to clean the silly thing. The sponge filter is easy hosed out and let dry like the K&N Air Filter (without the oiling). Yeah the holding bay does get dusty and grimey looking but it's easily cleaned out.

I like my Eureka "Boss" Smartvac. It "sucks" great, is not cumbersome, and has a hepa filter. Also, it is easy to maintain, in the event of hose clogs or belts that need changing. We have 2 dogs and a cat, and 3 kids, so vacuuming is a daily occurance.
My only complaint is the hose nozzle for the "accessories" is made of plastic, which has already chipped.
