My Robin/ Subaru engine .. it is an old Wisconsin engine.. won't start. Didn't have fuel pressure so I bought a new fuel pump. Now it wont start. It will start if you pour gas down the carburator. Runs and shuts off. Fresh gas, getting good spark. It is an 18 HP horizontal. What is wrong?

Carburator mount bolts loose or bad gasket and sucking air.

    Thanks---Peabo

I am thinking it is either some electical choke hookup it has or carburator guts.

I am pulling carb tomorrow. My patience is running thin. The HK or Garand will put big holes in it soon.

You can check this if you have a 12 volt power supply. When the coil heats up it should move, then when it cools back down it will slowly move back.

Remove the fuel line from the carb and crank the engine over and see if you get fuel. If you do them most likely it is a stuck float or plugged jet in the carb.

It is getting fuel to the carb from the new fuel pump. Plenty of fuel. Could be a stuck float. Or critters got down in the carb.

Got it running.. Electrical fuel shutoff on side of carburator, looks like to keep the fuel from running down to the engine when shut off. It opens up with the ignition. I got it running by pulling it out and starting the engine. Then when I shut it off fuel runs out the hole.

I've worked on to many of this, probably your needle valve, but i'd buy a carb. kit and rebuild it.. the easiest carb in the world to rebuild....but it might be that your gas inlet is pluged. also check if your filter is plugged in any case, thats one sweet engine, they never die. they went down hill after robins bought them

I don't need anything but this piece. It works off the ignition switch to the carb. Black tip retracts to let fuel into the engine.
