what caliber rifle has similar recoil to a 12 gauge 2 3/4 in. slug out out a pump with 20 inch slug barrel?

416 Rigby, 458 Win Mag, 45-70. There are probably several others out there also.

About the same as a 30-06 in a light or medium-weight rifle. The shape of the stock can affect the perception of recoil, making one gun seem to recoil more/less than another with similar energy.

I can tell you from personal experience that a Remington Model 700 ADL 7mm Mag kicks about as much as a 3 1/2" mag 12 gauge. It's got a little punch to it, but you don't even realize it when you got a nice 8 point about 150 yards out, right in the crosshairs...

......I'm sure someone can chime in with the ft/lb data, but even given the exact same number, perceived recoil can vary greatly, governed by the recoil pulse signature and plain old human perception. Standing up on my hind legs, I'd say that the 2 3/4" slug and a light (6 1/2)lb .30/06 or .308 feel similar. On the bench, leaning into the gun, MY perception is that the shotgun beats me up more, even though the recoil may be "similar".

.....Then you can get into semi-auto vs bolt gun. I know that to me, my Rem. 740 semi feels softer to me than a bolt gun. Same goes for shotguns. Rem. 1100 semi vs 870 pump. No doubt about the semi feeling softer, even though the same load is being fired. Jesse, I hope that I've confused you good and proper.[:D] By the way, the buttplate went out early last week. Should be there soon.

...Ive only shot a few dozen slugs, 12, 16...and the recoil was way less than say 7 1/2 bird...no bolt gun. 12 was a semi, and the 16 was 870
WM...A slug was almost no kick at all...[;)]

I've shot some 3" Mag slugs out of my Winchester Defender 18" Cylinder bore. They don't remove my glasses but will knock them off my nose. Compare that to a 30/06 out of a Garand and the garand is like a AR .223
