Email Virus?

I am getting lots of returned as undeliverable emails. Message says a virus was detected, so it was returned. I understand that.

Only thing is, these emails are bouncing back from addresses I never heard of. I didn't send them to begin with.

Is this my problem or someone else's?

I am running Norton AV to see if there is a virus present.

But it seems to be someone else's. Like that Klez virus that could send emails and make it look like it was coming from somewhere else.

I ran Norton and it found nothing.

I guess I quit worrying about it.

Not long ago I was getting e-mail from people saying "stop spamming me!" It turned out somebody else's computer had a virus and while they were out of town it was using all kinds of addresses to send random mail from his machine. The people who write the "stop spamming" and "I'm going to report you" mail are addressing the wrong people, because of course the addresses they're responding to are not the source of the virus' mail. I wouldn't do anything in your position, least of all respond to any of the junk mail regardless of content.

A new worm is propagating the Internet and it spoofs legitimate e-mail addresses for the "sender" field. When mail gateways receive this infected mail they send a non-delivery report to the spoofed address, yours.

Don't worry about it. Keep your system(s) up-to-date and run your A/V software (and a firewall, if possible).

Concealed is right. My ISP is issuing a directive to update your virus software's definition files today. Sobig is brand new and I hear the major antivirus companies all updated their downloads just today.

    David,

That is the new method to get you to open the attachment. When you do, Bang! You now have the virus. It's a ploy, don't bite. Who ever has the virus has your email in their address book. The returned email addresses are other addresses in his address book.

Got a Spam-Block and McAffee virusscanner on my mailserver.

Everything gets checked with an updated Norton Antivirus just to be safe. =o)

    No problems so far [:)]
Only a few mails have been reported to be infected, as my friends and family are generally updated too.

Between two firewalls, my ISP's A/V protection, Norton A/V and Mail Washer, I think I'm fairly well covered, but I update my definitions at least twice a week, also. It's hard to believe so many jerks would spend so much time and effort to mess with people they don't know, but that's the way of the world it seems.

updating is critical. NORTON has posted three new viri alerts in two days. One on 18 Aug. Two on 19 Aug.(today). Had trouble with my ISP connection a few hours ago. They won't say if any of this is related or not.
