What are you SURE is true - without proof!

"WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IS TRUE EVEN THOUGH YOU CANNOT PROVE IT?"

Great minds can sometimes guess the truth before they have either the evidence or arguments for it (Diderot called it having the "esprit de divination").

What do you believe is true even though you cannot prove it?

There are enough opinionated folks here to make this interesting!

I believe I have to take a crap, although I cannot prove it until I make an attempt to squeeze.

edit: this belief is no longer valid, as I have confirmed proof.

    actually its not

The blue color of the sky is due to Rayleigh scattering. As light moves through the atmosphere, most of the longer wavelengths pass straight through. Little of the red, orange and yellow light is affected by the air.

However, much of the shorter wavelength light is absorbed by the gas molecules. The absorbed blue light is then radiated in different directions. It gets scattered all around the sky. Whichever direction you look, some of this scattered blue light reaches you. Since you see the blue light from everywhere overhead, the sky looks blue.
As you look closer to the horizon, the sky appears much paler in color. To reach you, the scattered blue light must pass through more air. Some of it gets scattered away again in other directions. Less blue light reaches your eyes. The color of the sky near the horizon appears paler or white.

But it is blue. The explanation given only seems to describe why it isn't red and yellow also. It sounds to me like it is each of those colors, just the others are filtered out leaving behind the blue.

Oh and I am sure that when I fish I will catch one and when I hunt I will get one. And when I slip into bed tonight I will surely get some. [;)]

In space, there is no atmosphere to scatter the sun's light. On Earth, some of the shorter wavelength light (the blues and violets) are removed from the direct rays of the sun by scattering. The remaining colors together appear yellow.

Also, out in space, the sky looks dark and black, instead of blue. This is because there is no atmosphere. There is no scattered light to reach your eyes. As the sun begins to set, the light must travel farther through the atmosphere before it gets to you. More of the light is reflected and scattered. As less reaches you directly, the sun appears less bright. The color of the sun itself appears to change, first to orange and then to red. This is because even more of the short wavelength blues and greens are now scattered. Only the longer wavelengths are left in the direct beam that reaches your eyes. The sky around the setting sun may take on many colors. when the air contains many small particles of dust or water these particles reflect light in all directions. Then, as some of the light heads towards you, different amounts of the shorter wavelength colors are scattered out. You see the longer wavelengths, and the sky appears red, pink or orange.

So again the sky is NOT blue...

Blood is not blue, blue bloods notwithstanding. Blood is red, at least in mammals. In Vulcans it is purported to be green.

It would depend on how you define color. Nothing has color, things merely reflect different parts of the spectrum of light. Grass reflects the green part of the spectrum so grass apears green to me. If in fact I look into the sky and the blue part of the spectrum is reflected to my eye, then in fact the sky is blue.

And yes sometimes it is red and or yellow.

But today it's blue. Just as the grass I'm getting ready to mow today is green, even though in a few months it will be turning brown.

This one is easy to prove.

Have a friend slam a sledge hammer into a steel plate half a mile away. Watch him through binoculars or such. You will hear it half a second later.

Watch lightening, hit the stop watch. Sound travels at 1100 feet per second, you can time the distance.

All of the things I am sure of have proof. For example, I assert that pizza is the most nearly perfect food. From the point of view of the dietician, it contais all of the food groups: grains in the crust, vegetables in the sauce, dairy in the cheese, meat in the pepperoni, fungus in the mushrooms, and those that wish can have pinapple for the fruits. Also, I have eaten it. That is proof enough for me!

I believe in the theory that the sum of intelligence in the world is constant, but the population keeps increasing. Despite tons of evidence, I still can't exactly prove it. -- but it sure would explain a lot of things. [:D]

    Speed of sound

The only problem with the speed of sound is that it is different in different mediums. For instance, in the thicker air at low altitude it is around 740mph. Up high in the thin air it is around 660mph. In water its around 3,000mph and in solids like steel its even higher.

As for the speed of light, scientists are now saying that it is not a constant of approx. 186,000 miles per second, that it can in fact be slowed down and/or sped up by gravity and magnetism.

So as with everything, truth is relative.

Yes, I really do believe that (with my tongue firmly planted in my cheek).
You have to admit it would help explain why people seem to be getting dumber all the time.

(Actually, it's somebody or other's postulate from a Murphy's Law book. But it does raise an interesting point to ponder. Of course, I'm overly cynical.)
