Any Bagpipers here?

I'm hoping that someone here plays the Bagpipes or has in the past. I've been at things in the past two weeks that have had Bagpipes and it has gotten me to thinking about learning to play. I can probably find someone that plays from Fort Wayne FD but thought I would start here since it easy and I'm thinking about it now.

I'm wondering what it takes to get started. I checked eBay and found that for $200 or less I can get a starter set of pipes. They have full size and Parlor size. Any one know of a good book or DVD that tell how to start playing?

Thanks for any help.

All you really need is a musical ear - and a good set of lungs.

And don't dispair when you can't get ait into the bag the first few times.. some bagpipes are tough to get going.

I don't play any kind of an instrument now nor have I ever played one. I think that I have the wind to play just don't know how much of an "Ear" I have for it.

    I'll check out the links.

    Thanks

Happy, that's like saying all you need to play the piano is musical fingers and a fat butt to sit on. Some people have musical talent, some dont.

It is very difficult for those who dont have any talent(I know cause i cant sing, cant dance, and cant play any instrument and i blame it all on a lack of genetically inherited talent)

Get a reed for the chanter, so you can remove it from the bag and drones and practice with it alone. Your neighbors will thank you.

They say that it is a somewhat difficult instrument to play. Dont let that discourage you though. I'm sure with hard work & determination you can master it. I remember learning bass many years ago, the key is to have fun and enjoy the learning process. Bagpipes is a beautiful instrument, good luck. [:)]

Well, have tried bagpipes.. but music isn't my thing..

    I'm better at listening..

But yeah.. you'd need talent too.. allthough a good set of lungs and the mere interest will get you very far with bagpipes.
Maybe the neighbour and wife would need the interest too..

We had a band playing at my brother's engagement party a couple weeks ago and my son decided he wanted to learn how to play the drums. The guy playing drums for the band was an instructor. He told me all you need is a good sense of rythmn. I shook my head and told my son that maybe he inherited rythmn from his mother but he wasnt going to get any from me.

Start with a practice chanter - about $40 and see how that goes. If you like it, get the full set. My wife is (was) a member of a pipe band (she plays the tenor drum - open class) called "Dunloggin" in the DC area, they played for years then everyone kind of lost interest and those that didn't joined "City of Washington" (COW). Now we just go to the Scottish festivals to see the pipers.

Went to a John Cage concert where he played his "Symphony for Bagpipes, Bicycles and Balloons" while planting corn. Pretty interesting. But if I hear "Amazing Grace" on bagpipes one more time I'm gonna barf.

We got 3 "pig squeezers aka bagpipers" here.
One can play "In the Garden of Eden aka Indagodavita" real good.
After a while they do get on your nerves.
You ought to see these guys 6 footers over 250lbs each in skirts with them hariy legs.

    Real scary..
