thought about going with this one or similar smoker and then buying a cheap propane one to do burgers, steaks, etc.

http://www.traegertv.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-DRTV-Site/default/Default-Start?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Renegade Elite - Bing Ads&utm_term=traeger renegade elite grill&utm_content=renegade elite

kinda pricy but the ease of keeping a constant temp is compelling but they also make one that's 300ish at Academy

may go with this AND a regular propane grill;

what kind of set up do you guys have/recommend?

Ok, here we go again: Traegers are CHEAP because they are CRAP! If you use them much at all, the firebox WILL BURN OUT. Parts are expensive, if you can get them, too.

I own a Mak Grill, which is probably the last grill I'll ever have to buy. It is a grill and a smoker in one. It is NOT CHEAP, but it is 100% made in the USA!

    This is my grill.

    https://www.makgrills.com/product-category/2-star-accessories/2-star-general/

A lot of it depends on just how much you grill. I grill at least 2x a week. Cheaper grills burn out pretty quickly at that rate.

Pellet smokers are THE WAY TO GO! I am a damned good cook, and this grill has allowed me to make the best food I've ever made, period.

Pellet smokers give you the taste of real wood, with the ease of propane. They are the way to go, imo.

Over the years I have gone through a plethora of cheap "Char Broil" propane grills.

At best, they would last a couple of seasons until the cheap burners would literally fall apart.

Only once did I try to fix one by buying replacement parts and learned it was much better to just replace the entire grill.

About 6 years ago I bought a Webber twin burner propane job that took me up to this season.

Upon this springs unveiling I discovered that the 5 cross plates aka burn deflectors had corroded to the point of falling apart.

The burners are still in working order so I will be making a new set of 5 21" steel deflectors.

When it comes to grills you do get what you pay for!!

I have found that my very best outdoor cooking came from the results of good planning for coals in my open fire pit. Burning good hardwood Cherry and maple logs with a steel grate over the top.

I get all the enjoyment of a good campfire and quality PBR time in before the cooking begins!

I grill year round in the Midwest. Rain, snow, etc.
Gas Grill, WEBER. Last one lasted 20+ years. The one I replaced it with is 6-8 years old and it's like new.
I run mine on Natural gas. No tanks for me!
Charcoal grill? A good old fashioned Weber Kettle.
A couple friends have the Green Eggs and love them.
I'm no fan of the cheap flimsy Chinese Home Depot/Walmart grills.

Well, I have a lot of different kinds of grills. Three smokers, one weber charcoal, one propane of some kind, and a fire pit made from an old tractor rim, with a homemade grill over it. I use them all, depending on time, and circumstance. I like the fire pit the best for grilling, and the smokers with the indirect heat box best for ribs, brisket and such. The propane is handy, when you need it in a hurry. Not as good as real smoke, but better than cooked on an indoor stove.

    Peace

For 2 people this is all my wife and I need. It's made from stainless steel and it's been sitting on our deck for 2 years and there no rust on it.

We use the Louisiana Pellet grill and better than the Traeger and great cooking and back-up a NG grill. Set the meat probe and go off and let it cook with no turning the meat

Those are fine choices. I can't get my head around using a grill you need to plug in- but I know they make good food.

jeez guys, I'm 60yo. if I buy a 100 dollar weber and it last 5 years under the covered porch, which it should AND I live to be 90 I'll spend 600 on grills til I croak or I can spend 2 grand on a longer lasting grill. sorry but I'm pocketing the $1400 and getting a new grill every 5 years.

I bought a Ducane in 2000 that was supposed to last forever but the tray has been replaced twice and the last one was custom made 1/8inch plate and it's flaking bad now. I've had to operate on it 4-5 times over the years to get it back into shape. the ss burners are fantastic but the rest is toast. it was their low end model and it was $500. I might be on my 4th weber by now but at least I'd have had a new one ever so often and not fooled with jury rigging them as they are throw aways once they start to fail. and I can't tell the difference between a steak cooked on a weber or one on a 2k grill.

I'm going with one of these masterbuilt electric smokers and a cheap 5 year grill. I'll get the smoker now and the grill later. I can get one more summer out of the Ducane. btw, Ducane went belly up 10 or so years ago.

My Traeger is 100% American made and cost less than 1/4 of the one you linked to.
If, and I say if, the fire box ever burns out I can buy 3 more grills and still have money leftover.
Mine is over 10 years old and still going strong.
I did need a new igniter last year and went to the local Ace Hardware and bought a Traeger brand replacement for $29.
Traeger just moved to Utah and they are very helpful and have parts available.

I bought it on Amazon in May of 2015 for $37.35 and it was listed as: Outdoor Gourmet Stainless Steel Mini Charcoal Grill Sold by: The Twisted Cup.

I looked it up on Amazon and it appears that they are no longer available.

You might check else where and locate one.

I've never seen a single Traeger that was 100% American made. Everything I've ever seen was made in either Tawain or China.
