Anyone here have a rifle in this chambering? How does it compare to the 7mm Remington Mag? Are dies easy to find? A local pawn shop has a rifle chambered in it, a very nice custom on a VZ24 Mauser action. Asking price is $300.

Very similar to this, including the barrel length, and condition: http://www.GunBroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=412623622

I've only seen one in my life. Guide in Cody WY had one built on a Mauser action IIRC. Basically identical performance but NOT interchangeable.
Compared to 7mm Rem mag the 7x61 case is slightly shorter with a longer neck and more body taper

As noted, the case head is the same diameter but it has slightly more body taper and is a little shorter. Norma used to make brass for it and RCBS & Redding at least used to have dies available for it. If worse came to worst, it would be very simple for a gunsmith to run a 7 Rem Mag reamer in it- but I'd much prefer the uniqueness of the S&H.

I have one in a Schultz and Larsen. My wife has a custom one built on a Whitworth action. My Mother-in-law has a custom one built on a Whitworth action.
Comparing to the 7mm Remington Magnum is splitting hairs.
Hard to find ammo for it now. Best to reload.
Very unique and well worth the asking price.

That's what attracted me to it, the uniqueness of it. On top of that, I have numerous boxes of 7mm bullets (kept because of my 7x57 Ruger), and probably 200 once-fired 7mm Remington mag cases.

I'm assuming that, in a pinch, I could form 7x61 cases from the Remington brass, then?

I haven't looked-up the forming of S&H brass, but I suspect that all that's needed is to run Rem brass through a full length S&H die and trim to length.

From The Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions by John J. Donnelly.
Made from factory or 300H&H mag. Do Not Anneal. Run into 7X61 form die. Trim to 2.4". Chamfer. Fire form in chamber.
He goes on to say he's had good luck using 300 Win Mag cases.
When I was a kid, about 13 years old, I traded a pretty rough Winchester model 54 in 257 Roberts, for a custom built 1903 Enfield in 30-06. A long story. Anyway, the gunsmith I traded with, re-barreled that model 54 and made it into a 7X61 S&H. That was my first encounter with that caliber.

You need to make double darned sure that reformed brass doesn't find it's way back into a 7mmRem mag. Back in the days when I was doing cartridge contortions, I NEVER used a donor case of a caliber fitting any rifle I had that couldn't be readily noticed as being modified . No 30/06 made into 8x57 or 8mm06 or 6mm into 257 Rob or things like that.
