Peopling

The older I get, the more I despise peopling. I'm starting to see it as an attribute for job interviews. It's not about engagement, empathy, or understanding. It's about shoving your agenda through. There is benefits to using force. All "people person" is a person who screws you up the * hole and tries to make you think it feels good. It's a waste of time and energy.

Sure it's politically incorrect but I think it's really a selling point in a job interview to say I don't do peopling well. I'm not a people person and the truth is most people aren't. The ones who claim they are such really are probably the most selfish there is.

Peopling is overrated.

I have never heard that term before and I had to look it up:

    peopling
pronounced (people ing): the ability to tolerate people and their stupidity, as well as your own stupidity in a public setting. To people or engage in the act of peopling is to be able to remain tactful despite a person's obvious stupidity, and/or, lack of social skills.

I have very little tolerance for stupidity. So I would tell any HR guy that. If I was hiring I would not want anyone who was good at "peopling".

Stupidity should never be tolerated. Ignorance can be fixed but stupidity cannot.

Since I retired from the Army after 25 years I have worked for 5 different Military Contractors. My interview consisted of handing them my resume and my DD214. I was asked a few question about certain things and if I was able to do/teach certain skill and I was hired.

Even when I worked for the USDoS I was not asked questions about "peopling"

I guess I have lived a secluded life[;)]

I was thinking about this term and this post and I had to smile.

I doubt I have ever been hired for my peopling skills.

Even the USDoS with all their touchy feely BS didn't say a word about my ability to put up with idiots(Although I had to when dealing with them)

During "Pathways to Leadership" I had the most legendary sell job on a pencil. People wanted to cut their own throats. Later during breakout sessions the leader would take a big step back, side step, and step forward to avoid my table. It was hilarious.

I actually got a lot out of it. with decent people, engagement is fun and challenging to provide and satisfy others to get the most out of a group but ultimately people are still selfish. If they think the boss is screwing them, they will push back. Marriage is about the same. A person can never "give" enough when the spouse always looks at what isn't "given". It's really a taking and not a relationship based on giving.

Went to some training once when I worked for HCA Hospitals regarding talent selection.

Truth is some people are naturally very talented at BS.

When I worked for a Hotel company I used to hire my front desk clerks by going to another Hotel and listening to them, then offered a good bit more money to those who handled themselves well.
Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

That is not the definition. Peopling is populating or breeding, what that is referencing is "Idioting".

Lets just say that if you are in sales or Customer service you have to put up with a LOT of idiots without losing composure. I have (very politely) told more than a few idiots to pound sand or GTFO of my booth before I had security remove them.. they got the hint... and God forbid that you have to do ANYTHING with HR... Righting reviews these days is comical. I get the kids old reports cards out and copy phrases off them... HR loves me.... [}:)]

Fascinating. I never would have guessed trade shows could be such a problem.

"OH Look, there is the GB.com exhibit. I'm going to go over there and give them a piece of my mind about that poor review someone gave me."

    "Honey, don't. You're drunk."

"No, I'm all right. This won't take long. Hold my beer."

Yupper, I worked a customer service counter(among other things) for 30 years and current work in direct contact with a wide variety of folks who generally don't care to have me on their doorstep.
Putting up with sarcasm, dis-interest, outright lies, and general disrespect while presenting oneself with dignity and courtesy is a pretty difficult job most of the time.
As I get older, I've lost a certain amount of self control and tend to call a spade a spade. Have to be careful how that's worded when you're right in front of someone who just lied to you.
