    I`d take a 25-20,
    neck it down to .224

    Then I`d take a .250 Savage case
and neck it down to .224...I believe
this would be a decent varmint round!

    .218

Did sombody say somethin` about bees?

Not a new caliber but I would like to see a 12 gauge in a pistol for last ditch protection.Laugh all you want but one shot towards center mass would be all it takes and to hell with with recoil and your broken wrist!!

I don't think there's really anything new out there that can't be loaded in a pre-existing cartridge.

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

How about a .303/.338AI (.303 necked up and Ackley Improved) Give new life to all those SMLE's that have been selling so cheaply.

Do you think they could handle the pressure? I've heard of people having lever guns ackley improved and handloading to almost max, and having trouble crancking the lever to get the spent case out. What would it do to an old SMLE. Maybe break the bolt???

I like the .30-.378 Ackley Improved idea...

I'd like to see that 180 grain flying about 3600fps

pigeoncreek1, I toyed with the idea of getting redding to cut me a custom die set, and then, send the reamer to my gunsmith so that he could chamber the barrel exactly to the full length size and neck size. That way the FL die would provide a perfect fit. BUT,...I wouldn't want one with any less than a 28-30" barrel in a big contour to control that much pressure. The 30-378 AI would be one POTENT round to say the least. Who knows, maybe in a year or so I will get that itch again and start the construction. If you hear of some guy blowing up diesel motors for hand loading tests, you'll know I did it.

    JustC,

I'll put my order in right now! I have some old diesel truck engines at my shop that would be willing test subjects.

I can picture it... nice 28" fluted stainless #4 contour barrel, answer muzzle break, H-S presicion stalk...topped off with a 6.5 X 20 Leupold...get to work!!!

Lee, as long as you hold the pressure to under 50K# - ought to be OK (assuming a decent action to start with). I think I might just go ahead and make one of these and let you know. Only drawback I can think of is that the .303 is notoriously bad on brass, don't know how many re-uses you would get

pigeoncreek1, your order is perfect for the study. I want mine with a contour 8 barrel, same stock, jewell trigger, and a nightforce 12-42x with tactical knobs and illuminated range finding reticle. You know, in case it gets dark while we shoot engine blocks, I want to be able to see my crosshairs and all. (lol) then we can have a basis for making recomendations on sporter weight and heavy weighted rifles for our new "proprietary" cartridge. I bet we could take over the moosehunting and benchrest circuit. Then,....it's on to create the 338UM ackley improved, and the 375UM ackley improved. Finally, my "pet" load, the 50BMG ackley improved, in a modified barret M82 A1.
