Question about law?

I have a strange question about law. This is to settle a dispute between a friend and me.I had a dog run up on my front porch last night and try to kill my cat.I about shot him for it.My friend swears up and down that I cant do that and I would go to jail for cruelty but if its on my property and its trying to kill one of my pets why would this be.Its a Pit Bull and another dog that somebody down the street just lets run loose every night.Would it be cruelty if I went to chase it off and it came after me.Im pretty tough but Im not wrestling with a pit bull.Does anyone know if this is illegal in Alabmaa? And where I could go to find out so I can prove it.Remember its on my property attacking one of my animals and possibly me.What do you all think?

    Section 13A-11-14
    Cruelty to animals.
    (a) A person commits the crime of cruelty to animals if, except as otherwise authorized by law, he intentionally or recklessly:

    (1) Subjects any animal to cruel mistreatment; or

    (2) Subjects any animal in his custody to cruel neglect; or

    (3) Kills or injures without good cause any animal belonging to another.

    (b) Cruelty to animals is a Class B misdemeanor.

    (Acts 1977, No. 607, p. 812, §5565.)

Phone the local sherriff,(sp?) (if it is, I always spell that word wrong) They should be able to tell you.. That is an interesting site by the way.. even has the carry regs.

Its doing pretty good had a mild infection start to set in on me but they increased my anti-bio's.It started getting a little pink around the edges.I have been eating right and getting my rest that is when I dont get waken up my a dog mauling my cat.I thought somebody was trying to get in my front door cause thats where the dog had it and it kept banging the burglar bar.But I do seem to be doing alright I go back for another check up next week and I get my staples out in a couple so I would say Im doing better than some who have been there. But thank you for asking and your prayers.Oh no I said the p word.Shame on me.Just kidding around. Thanks for the concern and best wishes.

(Eric, right now it might be best for you to try to avoid any additional use of a firearm which might involve the police being called--you don't want to do anything that might make you appear to be "trigger happy". Keep a broom handy to chase away any unwanted dogs--it might be better for you to be bitten by the dog and let an animal control officer deal with it, than shoot the thing yourself...just a suggestion...)

For those who doubt the validity of your statements concerning the incident over the robbery, why not post a copy of the police report, since there was no mention of it in the local papers?. I am taking it for granted that you received a copy of it... Just a suggestion...

Glad my "cruelty to animals" post was helpful.

Eric I hope I can save you some grief as you probably should not be getting upset right now, dont mean to sound like your mother. But call Animal control and report your problem,no one should be letting a pit bull run loose in a populated area, and I think animal control will agree with me.

    Best wishes!!
