Hypothyroidism (under active Thyroid)

edited March 2013 in General Discussion
Is anybody being treated for an under active thyroid condition? I have been takings meds for this around ten years and I am 48. It seems the last couple years I am not near as sharp mentally as I use to be. This I felt was one of my strengths, but anymore I can't seem to remember as well, not nearly as mentally sharp as I was and get confused in my thoughts. From reading, this is one of the possible symptoms. Anybody else having possible symptoms from this condition.

have you had blood work lately to determine that your taking the correct dosage still?, it can change over time and somewhat suddenly from what I understand. My mom has thyroid issues.

I have blood work done twice a year and with taking the meds it is still a little low, but the doctor says it would be better to take the current strength meds I am taking as long as possible. I currently take 88mcg Synthroid.

I have been battling hypothyroid for 20 years. It can be a real nightmare.

I have improved my thyroid function quite a bit but it was still a little off. Just 2 weeks ago I began taking iodine supplements and the improvement is vast. I have so much more energy, and my mind is more clear.

Why don't you give these little pills a try?

    http://www.oasisadvancedwellness.com/learning/iodine-fulfillment-therapy.html

If you run it by your doctor he probably will tell you not to take it.
Most docs are not very knowledgable about treating the thyroid, but, they think they know it all.
Just try this stuff for a few weeks, if you feel better, great, if not, then you didn't need it. You will suffer no adverse side effects from one iodine pill a day.

If you can't find any online email me and I will send you a new bottle, I have a stash of it and it only costs $11 for a bottle of 90 pills.

Thyroid issues or not, it does not get better the older you get, you will learn to cope with it. It is a powerful reminder to forgive quickly, the forget part will come naturally....... [:D]

My wife has been on it for a few years and her memory is awful now. Would never have put that together, but thanks as she takes it for another reason besides the thyroid.

Allen do you still take the iodine supplements and how is is working out so far? I noticed it has been over a year since you started taking it. It seems mine is getting worse and from taking the medicine (Levothyroxin 112MCG) there seems to be lots of side effects and my TSH levels are still off. quote:Originally posted by allen griggs

There are basically two types of prescription thyroid meds; synthetic and natural. The natural(Armour Thyroid or NP Thyroid) is better and addresses more of the thyroid. The synthetic only addresses the t4. There are fewer side effects with the natural thyroid.(I've tried both kinds)You might benefit from a book called Stop The Thyroid Madness by Janie A. Bowthorpe, M.E.d. Hope this helps. Karen Nielsen

I urge you to try the Armor. I had much better results with this.

I had terrible thyroid problems for a decade and it about ruined my life. Most doctors do not understand thyroid problems and they are inept at treating them. I am especially including endocrinologists.

But, they think they know it all.
A bad combination, ignorance and arrogance.

I found a great doctor here in Asheville NC named Dr. Biddle. Look him up at docbiddle.com

He 95 percent cured my thyroid condition by using the Wilson's Thyroid treatment program.

If you are any where near Asheville you ought to go see the doc. If it is too far away, call his office and get a recommendation for a doc near you. jltrent, I wasted so much time and money, and suffered for 10 years, with doctors who tried and failed to give good treatment for my hypothyroid condition.

After 6 months of treatment with Dr. Biddle I threw away my Armor thyroid pills and now I just take an over the counter iodine supplement. I have only about 5 percent of they thyroid problems that I used to have but I must admit the iodine gives me a little boost. I could live without it.

If you haven't been there, you can't imagine how hypothyroid will ruin your life. Mental confusion, fatigue, depression, feeling cold all the time.

May need to do something cause its back I think. Have good and bad days.

Some times I have to take a Hot shower just to get Moving cause I'm too cold.

Thanks Allen, I am about a 2 1/2 hour drive from Ashville, NC. I may check and see if Dr. Biddle takes my insurance and if so get an appointment. What I'm doing now isn't helping. Thanks Liquote:Originally posted by allen griggs

A 2 1/2 hour drive. This could be a life-changing day for you.
You really ought to go to see Dr. Biddle. You just can't go on living so sick with this ailment, and after all, the docs you are seeing aren't getting the job done.

Dr. Biddle doesn't take insurance. You pay cash.
He will give you the forms and you can file it with your insurance so, perhaps your insurance would pay.

Even if not, what would it be worth to you to have your health restored?
I know when I was so sick with hypothyroid, I was suicidally depressed many times.
