SECOND YEAR IN A ROW. When it's good,, it's good. When it's bad, hopefully that's someone else.

quote:For the second year in a row, Midland, situated in the Texas oil patch, kicked off the year with the lowest jobless rate in the country.

Midland, Texas had a 2.6% jobless rate in January, beating out Lincoln, Neb. at 2.8% and Ames, Iowa at 2.9%. Midland has an estimated 100,000-strong workforce, 97,300 of whom are in the private sector.

That is really easy,, 97.3 percent in the private sector. The rest ? not so lucky,, maybe time for a strike !!!

What this underlines is that people aren't willing to live out in that part of the world without being paid to do it. [:D]

That will change with the drop in oil prices.

quote:Meanwhile, the metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) of Yuma, Ariz., and El Centro, Calif., continued to suffer the nation's highest joblessness, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said. Unemployment in El Centro and Yuma was 21.3% and 19.8%, respectively.
No jobs, but boy is the dove hunting great in that area.

I used to drive through there a lot. Not a good place to stop at the Pilot in Midland, or the Loves in Odessa next door, so many fracking trucks in there you can hardly turn around.
A year ago, I was in the Loves in Odessa, there was a sign on the wall "Janitor and Rest Room Technician Wanted $17.50/hr to start."

I crunched the numbers, this job would pay about $35K a year to mop the floor and mow the lawn. That is with no overtime, and, I bet he would get lots of overtime.

Back in the real world where I live, North Carolina, that job would pay about $20K tops.

I haven't been through Midland for about a year, I hear things are slowing down since the oil price has dropped.
