Who owns a Unimog?

I've wanted a 4x4 for years now, and am finally at the point where I can afford some "toys" :)

So, I am looking at Unimogs. They look great, and I've heard good things about them. Anyone have any pointers or opinions on them?

Let me know!

Thanks.

Merc

Here is a picture of one:

I had one of those- but the doctor removed it. I don't know what that is but I drove a 71 jeep cj5 for ten years and it was the best- then!
Now- I'm older and want a/c amd comforts for a main vehicle, but would be glad to have an old jeep again to cruise in!
I rolled that jeep twice, got it stuck once, it was a tuff friend when I was young- I loved it!
    WHATS A - UNIMOG????????????

The son of a co-worker of mine owns one and presently has it for sale. What a trip that thing is. Go anywhere, but very under-powered. Top speed of around 65 mph. I think he wants 20,000 bucks for it.

Dude, that thing is ugly, why don't you look into maybe a surplus humvee or something?

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

There is a big surplus store here that keeps those for sale. I think they get about $6500 for them. They also have another foreign 4x4 but I don't know what it is.

They were a hot go-anywhere German Army tactical small truck/hauler in the early '60s. I believe there was a power takeoff in the rear to power trailer wheels.
It should be a great off road work vehicle but a freeway cruiser it's not.

Theres a salvage yard south of Denver that has a number of UniMogs for sale. Also a few MiniMogs and several of the Pinzgauer trucks also. Prices seem pretty reasonable. They arent salavaged wrecks, he gets them from some importer as surplus to resell. All are in nice shape, run great. Ive been tempted to buy one myself. If you want the fone number, email me and Ill get it for you. Good luck.

The Mercedes-Benz Unimog has been made since the 1950s, and there are many variations. The round-hood models are my favorites. Case imported them for a while and sold them as construction and farm implements! (Dodge marketed the original Power Wagon as a substitute for a farm tractor in the late 1940s to early 1950s - I have a video of an old advertisement of one pulling a plow! A 3-point hitch was an option!) I have some early brochures showing Unimogs being used for about anything one can imagine. The tires/wheels are about small tractor size, which adds to the ground clearance as well.

The great thing about a Unimog is the geared hubs. Like the Hummvee, the geared hubs allow ground clearance up to the underbody. Like the original Power Wagons, Unimogs have power-take-offs available in the front, in the bed and at the rear, to power whatever is needed.

These are small/medium trucks so are not made for timber work or the like, but they are great for heavy work and fun. The are not a great highway vehicle for the reasons stated.

The place nunn is talking about is one of the
bigger military surplus whoesalers in the
country. These guys sell to US Cav and Brigade
    Quartermasters, among others.

They always have 30-40 Unimogs on hand, all
straight from the military (German I think).
They've still got the rifle sockets installed
in the cab. You might try these guys if you want
one with low mileage. Let either me or nunn
know and we can get their contact info for you.

Be careful if you look for a GI surplus HUMVEE.
The gov't doesn't sell surplus Hummers that are
still in one piece. They normally cut the frames
before selling them, so the ones you see for
sale have been pieced back together. I've been
told by GI Hummer owners that if you find one
that's never been cut it's probably stolen gov't
property and therefore seizable. Buyer beware.

Why would they cut the frame?

Thirteen years old. Now, that is a blast from the past. Most of those guys are gone, gone, gone. Gone where?
