Upcoming solar eclipse....

Y'all...I've heard 3 time in the last two days about folks having a hard time finding visual aids for viewing the upcoming solar eclipse. Do like I do...use your welding helmet.
What!....you don't have a welding helmet! Shame on you...May I suggest you swing by your local welding supply store or metal mart and pick up a replacement welding helmet lens in #13 or #14 density. Should cost $1 to $7. Then simply tape it to your face and enjoy watching the sun disappear. Please be sure to remove before falling asleep! [:)]

my guess they are concerned even the lighter shade glass would be used .
just forwarding the advice from the "experts the TV news crew found )

Not wanting to argue or guide anyone in a direction they're not comfortable with but a #13 shade will be more than adequate...#14 even better.
But if you are worried about it, just put a pin hole in a cereal box. That's what we did the last time, and I am not blind.
The whole event was a let down really. Can't imagine the looting and rioting from the disappointed snowflakes this time.
local news keep telling every one do not use a welding helmet

Straight off of NASA's Eclipse viewing website, which I trust them more than I trust fake newscasters

C&P:
Viewing with Protection -- Experts suggests that one widely available filter for safe solar viewing is welders glass of sufficiently high number. The only ones that are safe for direct viewing of the Sun with your eyes are those of Shade 12 or higher. These are much darker than the filters used for most kinds of welding. If you have an old welder's helmet around the house and are thinking of using it to view the Sun, make sure you know the filter's shade number. If it's less than 12 (and it probably is), don't even think about using it to look at the Sun. Many people find the Sun too bright even in a Shade 12 filter, and some find the Sun too dim in a Shade 14 filter ?? but Shade 13 filters are uncommon and can be hard to find. The AAS Reputable Vendors of Solar Filters & Viewers page (link is external) doesn't list any suppliers of welder's filters, only suppliers of special-purpose filters made for viewing the Sun.To find out more about eyewear and handheld viewers go to https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/eyewear-viewers (link is external).
WHF. Who really cares to look at the sun? It will be all over TV. I'm more interested to see if it effects the behavior in the wildlife around my place.
They will do the same thing that they do when it gets dark every other day....
There is an expectation that a good number of cell phones will be damaged or destroyed...
There is an expectation that the ultra high volume of internet traffic - high speed data usage - and voice call activity will stress the systems capacity and cause some crashes and capacity based failures...
A high volume of traffic accidents has been predicted.
Makaila and the emergency room staff expect to see a spike in drug overdoses and domestic abuse victims.
I agree that watching the natives - watching the wildlife in the hood will be more interesting than the event itself.
We will keep a close eye on the pets and will bunker in place and observe from the porch - back yard.
For me the realization that I am alive has overshadowed things - that despite the fact that I am still deep in the struggle to recover I can start to do things again with loved ones...

Nambu will be approaching from the south pole and destroy earth at the moment of totality...
You will get 97.7% where you live. The difference between that last 2.3 percent and the ring of fire is the money shot....
I know that this is a big deal to many and I hope they really enjoy the experience. As for jeff, I'll look at any effect it has on all the wildlife around the house. I have no interest in looking at the sun. Now a few hundred years ago virgins were sacrificed to the sun god. I'm glad those days are over. There is a real shortage of virgins with all the towel-heads getting their 40.
Yeah, but those 40 virgins are 12 year old boys. Those towel-heads will love every one of them[xx(][xx(][xx(]
Shilowar, I'd ask if you're kidding but, unfortunately, I know you're dead serious, even the LEO cadre is infected with the snowflake plague. This country is in a lot of trouble.
Well don't you know, every thing is an officer safety issue to millenials.
Doomsday advocates will make thier predictions.
I asked my 14 year old daughter if any of her teachers were talking about the upcoming eclipse. She said no and did not know what the eclipse was all about. I was shocked to say the least. I simply cannot believe this subject is not front and center for study. There is a lot of science, geometry and physics to learn here let alone the rare event to experience, both visual and physical.
I asked my 11 year old son the same question and they are talking about it and are going to view it from a monitor in class.
Well, as a kid, I was back Stateside in 1979 and our whole school learned and went outside to witness the eclipse. We were instructed on how to make that little box with a pinhole to watch the event. Most thought it was so cool. Being in awe with it getting darker and cooler as the actual moon shifted in front of the sun. The only other time I witnessed such and event was when my dad stuck his big head in the way to give me a scolding for some nonsense I did! [:)]
I'm assuming most of use are adults here and the consensuses seems to be most don't care about this event or think it's stupid. Please take a moment and think outside you box and look at this from an educational point of view to teach your kids or grand kids, nieces or nephews a little about science. They have everything to gain as well as everything to loose. This is a perfect opportunity for them to learn, inspire and open their minds to the grand scheme of things.
Have fun with it folks.
Good Day. [:)]

I turned on all the lights in the house then went to one end and slowly walked to the other end of the house turning off the lights as I went.
Stood there in the dark for a few minutes, then slowly walked back turning the lights back on.

Stores also did not stock up and are running out of everything.
Just think what it will be like by Monday.
Traffic on I-5 Here in Eugene is bumper to bumper and almost every car Had a Calif Licence. One road I forgot which to eastern Oregon Is a crawl going east. Coming west it is clear sailing.
I hope the jam isn't too bad as I have to get to my place up in N. Carolina.
We will get 98.7 percent at my house and that will have to do for me.
I just have driven 7,500 miles in 2 weeks in the big rig and don't feel like driving 90 miles on Monday to get in a big traffic jam.
Anyway, we are having an eclipse party at my house.
