How long can you survive?

OK, I have read alot of posts here about EMP attacks, the Y2K thing happening again, basiclly we loose all power, etc... and must live "off the grid", for a lenth of time.

So, How long? How long would we have to survive on our own?

Example: Y2K, People bought generators, emptied thier back accounts, stock piled fuel, food, TP!, Gold!, Ammo, etc... but most felt it would be back to normal within two weeks.

What about a natural disaster? What about EMP? What about when China calls in our debt???

Bird flu/HXN1 is a bigger threat.
A month. Either you survive, or you don't.

once I have my knee surgery, I wouldn't be able to survive for long especially if something happened that forced us to go to ground.

Until food storage became an issue due to garden crop failure or hoards of "takers" burned me out.

If you depend on gasoline or any kind of public water supply, not long.

all the beans and rice in the world won't help when the water runs out.

Don't know, growing up in a remote area in the early 60's at the time we were off the grid more than on, a bunch during the winter. If I apply what I learned then to what I know how to do now. Well will just say it will be at least a 6 month camping trip for me.

I have a good well and plenty of wood to burn. Hopefully, enough gas to keep the freezers cold if it's hot weather. It might get pretty slim before seasonal vegetables or greenery was available. My son and I have been discussing options for longer term staple storage.
I'd estimate my house could survive for a month or longer as long as we could maintain our freezer.

Do any of you have an idea of how much wild plants and food grow all around you and you have no idea about them ? I suggest you start studying the wild plants around you and what good they will offer you in nutrition and medical. I think most of you would be surprised.

I believe one can sit down and do the math if one wants to be objective.
How much gas for the generator or inverters to run off the car motor using its gas. One can operate the freezer for 6 hours a day to keep it cold enough to keep what food you have.
Then, do you have gas/propane to cook with.
One needs to use up perishables.
It is this time most will find a way to have food but as time goes on you will not want to attract the attention of people by cooking.
So, you have used up your fridge food and must be cooked stuff and now is when you go black, hunker down, lay low.
You have been complaining to the neighbors about no food, going hungry, do you have any, please help us blah blah.

My point is to run this through your brain and see how much you have and what you need.

Within 4-6 weeks extreme violence will set in if order has not been restored.
I don't care how good you are in a firefight bad luck alone will assure your injury or death even if you are the stronger.
Stealth, staying hid and if violence comes exterminate the opposition not just drive them off, take out everyone.

Personally i don't see how that could get to the I am Legend or Zombieland stage as the feds will use such a scenario for a complete Soviet style take over and crush the opposition like Stalin did.

If the world has ended ala "The Road" or "The Book of Eli" well, let me wish us all good luck because good planning will amount to a 1 in 4 chance and luck will be the main ingredient for survival

My suggestion is before the big crap hits the fan thing is...

do an internet search on edible wild plants in the state you live in.

Download and print out for future reference.

Do another internet search on plants with medical value in the state you live in.

Download and print out for future reference.

Invest in a good wood saw and axe and you should be set for a life outdoors.

Depends on where you are and what you have. If we are talking a huge disaster, people could go for a few months. Key factor is going to be clean water availability.

and for a lot of other folks as well.
the worst disasters in human history (plagues etc) took up to 40% of various populations, but the majority survive.
in a modern day catastrophe the filthy rich would survive, 90% of professionals would perish (lawyers, mba's, stockbrokers etc) and 90% of farmers, ranchers, carpenters, mechanics, etc and 100% of hillbillies and rednecks would survive.
    survival of the fittest.
and anyone that owns a still will survive.[:D]

Back when Y2K was happening, the family next store were hoarding most everything they could get except guns and ammo. They said did not like guns when i asked them what they would do for protection.I was talking with them a few days later and they asked me what i had put away for bad times.I told them just guns and ammo. They said what good is that going to do you ? I said when i need anything i am going to come over to your house and get it.They now also own guns and ammo. They forgot about my 45 MM cannon he he.

Depends on how good the looting in my neck of the woods are for eats, drink and what ever I need? Also with enough hickory chips I reckon long pig will come out just fine.

Agree with you ... that one would be relatively quick.

On a par with or worse, than the 1918-1919 flu. It whipped out the majority of family members often times ... sometimes killed entire families.

It hit different regions of the World at different points, or times, but went all around the World.

I would expect that if a major happening occurred, 3-4 months would be minimal time wise. [:0] [:(] [V]

I expect I would live longer without all the stresses that come with living a civilized life, that requires so much more of me, beyond food, water and shelter, not only for me and mine, but for folks I don't even know, who can't or won't take care of themselves and would die quick under Nature's Law, if even they'd been born at all for serving no use but to drain resources by claim that their life is of value to us all. We may all be God's children and hold the gift of life, but Nature is God's Enforcer who will snatch it back if you fail to make it of value.
I grew up off the grid and am a better animal than a civilized man.

If an EMP knocked out all electric stuff, cars, trucks, etc, I have enough stuff to live for a year, and am ready, willing, and able to fight to defend it.
