Former Manson Follower, Sharon Tate Killer Being Considered for Prison Release
Friday , June 13, 2008

CORONA, California -

Former Charles Manson follower Susan Atkins, convicted in the 1969 murder of actress Sharon Tate, could soon be released from a U.S. prison because she is near death, authorities said.

Atkins, 59, is terminally ill and being considered for so-called "compassionate release," California state corrections spokeswoman Terry Thornton said. She gave no details of Atkins' illness, but said a doctor determined she had less than six months to live.

The corrections department must approve the request before it is passed to the state Board of Parole, which has the power to release terminally ill inmates under California state law so they can die with loved ones, at their expense.

Such releases are relatively rare - only 10 of 60 requests made last year were granted, Thornton said. The prisoners must have family members willing and able to care for them.

Atkins was one of cult leader Charles Manson's ersatz hippie "family" of young killers who burst into a Beverly Hills home 39 years ago and killed Tate, the pregnant wife of filmmaker Roman Polanski, along with four others. The following night they stabbed to death a wealthy couple in their Los Angeles home.

Atkins has been denied parole 11 times, most recently in 2005.

She was housed in the California Institution for Women in Corona for 37 years, but has been in a nearby hospital since March.

If she got life in prison, then that's what it should be....

We have to look at the fact that all "life" prisoners do not just fall over with a heart attack at the ripe old age of 99.
I don't see it as an act of compassion as much as an economic move .
The last few months of life in this case could be very expensive .
If her family is willing to take the responsibility, then let them take it instead of us .

No compassion here. If I can remember the trial correctly it Atkins who wrote "Pig" on the front door using Sharon Tate's blood [V]. If there is indeed a hell, she and the rest of Charlie's followers each have special places reserved front and center.

It doesn't exactly say who she would go to live with. Is there more to the article?

My compassion for her is to lower her gently into a pool of flowing, cool mineral water, then hand her the end of a 440Volt industrial extension cord![:(!]

Stop being silly! Let the woman go! The State of California will continue to care for her. If she DOES want out.....let her go.

The last words Sharon Tate, who was begging for her life and the life of her baby, reportedly heard were, "*, I have no mercy for you." Said by Susan Atkins.
I recently watched a documentary about the Manson women. And was intrigued by the news that each had a website. ( Apparently run by their lawyers as Lifer's are not allowed internet access).
Reportedly all 3, including Susan were "model prisoners" and had actually done some positive work. Susan reportedly saved the life of a fellow prisoner who had attempte suicide.
But she was also the most industrious at attempting to gain her freedom. At that time she a lawsuit against the State of Calif. claiming that they were denying her rights by keeping her in prison. I wouldn't be surprized if this was also a ploy.
Having once been a youngster myself, I do feel some sympathy for her (them) that horrible mistakes made so young in life, ruined any chance they ever had for a good life.
Young immature people are often lead astray and make mistakes. I know I did.
But mass murder is more over the top than I can forgive. All I have to do is think of the words she said to Sharon Tate, and IMO she should get what she gave.
    NO MERCY.

Let her die in prison in agony from whatever disease is killing her. It would be fitting punishment for the heinous crimes she participated in. If it were up to me, I'd withhold medical treatment as well. Why should "we" (the taxpayers) pay to treat terminal conditions when people were sentenced to life in prison, or death. Maybe those conditions are just supreme karma catching up with these dirtbags; and, we are just interfering by treating those conditions.

It was Susan "Sadie" Atkins who stabbed Sharon Tate in the ribs. The butcher knife hit a rib, and got stuck. Sadie was angry that she couldn't pull her knife out and she had to find another weapon.
I don't have much sympathy for her.
