Paris-AP -- A death row inmate in Pennsylvania is being honored by the city of Paris. The city council in the French capital is naming Mumia Abu-Jamal (moo-MEE'-ah AH'-boo jah-MAHL') as an honorary citizen of Paris.Abu-Jamal was convicted in the 1981 slaying of a police officer. He's been trying to win a new trial -- an effort that was rejected by a judge in Philadelphia last month.Abu-Jamal is a former Black Panther and journalist who has supporters around the world. He says he has new evidence that could clear him. He still has a federal appeal pending. The leader of the Communist Party members on the Paris city council says the decision to honor Abu-Jamal came after what he calls the "alarming news" that his appeal had been rejected.

In his appeal, Abu-Jamal claimed prosecutors acted in a "racially discriminatory manner" by unfairly keeping more blacks off the jury.
