Paris-AP -- A death row inmate in Pennsylvania is being honored by the city of Paris.The city council in the French capital is naming Mumia Abu-Jamal (moo-MEE'-ah AH'-boo jah-MAHL') as an honorary citizen of Paris.Abu-Jamal was convicted in the 1981 slaying of a police officer. He's been trying to win a new trial -- an effort that was rejected by a judge in Philadelphia last month.Abu-Jamal is a former Black Panther and journalist who has supporters around the world. He says he has new evidence that could clear him. He still has a federal appeal pending.The leader of the Communist Party members on the Paris city council says the decision to honor Abu-Jamal came after what he calls the "alarming news" that his appeal had been rejected.

    Abu-Jamal was also the "honored" commencement speaker a few years ago at Antioch University, Yellow Springs, Ohio.He delivered his address via tape, as he was not able to attend in person due to prior committtments- to prison.He was convicted in the slaying of Philadelphia officer Daniel Faulkner. He was found standing over the body with a gun in his hand; one of the prosecution witnesses was his own cousin. Yet he is an "oppressed" minority "wrongfully convicted" by the oppressive predjudiced white male dominated justice system.

    HOW can you all be so... so... INSENSITIVE!!! Just because he was found holding a smoking gun over the corpse of the cop he had murdered... er, that is, I mean, just because he was defending himself from a racist, facist, blue meanie, you all think he should be in prison! What meanies you all are!!! (Believe me, this was taken pretty much verbatim from a flyer posted by the Socialist Club here at the college I attend. And the worst part is, I'm serious.)

    Savage: Is the Socialist Club a recognized, chartered student organization? If they are, they are most likely recieveing some form of funding from the activity fees. (The activity fees paid by all students are pooled together and distributed to the clubs and organizations. )The distribution process may be determined by the student government, who reviews the budget requests from the organizations and decideds who gets what. If this is the case, you may want to find out when the budget committee is meeting, and show up with a well planned civil protest against the Socialist Club receiving funding. Another option is a letter to the editor of the campus newspaper. Is this a public school? Surprising. Antioch is a high dollar private liberal school. Their liberal-nesss goes back several years; Yellow Springs was one of the main stops on the Underground Railroad, and one of the first towns to openly welcome mixed raced couples. Its also home of the Green County Natural Law Party, and the Libertarians. It's also home of Youngs Dairy, John Bryant State Park, Camp Birch (Boy Scouts), and Glen Helen; so we let them live.

    MomMom, that's a thought. It's a community college, which means a high percentage of folks just trying to better themselves and not stinkin' little rich pukes, so maybe I should post some flyers of my own...

    .250, good idea. Check out the posting policy first- some schools make you get a little official stamp saying they can be up. A call to student government or the Dean of Students should also be able to tell you whether the Socialist Club is funded in part, by YOUR money; and if they are, how/when such funds are allocated. I would also reccommmend keeping to documented facts of his crime, and being extra careful not to use anything which could be construed as a "racist" statement. If it's a community college, it may very well have a police science or law enforcement program; good place to pick up some quick allies.

    8 years later after this was posted. Still no justice . No death penalty. A jury of 10 whites and two blacks convicted him of capital murder and sentenced him to death.

    In his appeal, Abu-Jamal claimed prosecutors acted in a "racially discriminatory manner" by unfairly keeping more blacks off the jury.
