Judge, is there an equivalent to Supica's S & W book on Colt? I am most interested in Colt handguns of say the last 50 years. Thanks, Judge!

Though it was not addressed to you, that was certainly helpful, Thanks!

Yes and no. How is that for a definite answer?

The Supica Smith book has order numbers, etc. on the later models. None of the Colt books have that. Supica covers tools, etc. in more detail than any Colt book of which I am aware. Most Colt books have higher quality photographs than the Supica book.

Looking for Colt books on the "new" revolvers of only the last 50 years will yield nothing much. Most of the books go all the way back, and then come forward. There is not much Post-War, although there are some books on the Woodsman through the end of production and Second and Third Generation Single Action Army revolvers, as well as Second Generation Black Powder.

The one book you must have is "The Book of Colt Firearms" by Wilson and Sutherland. Published in 1970, it is considered the best available, although it has some errors and surprising holes. It will be hard to find and expensive.

Wilson's "The Colt Heritage" borrows much from the first book mentioned and has pretty color pictures, but lacks the detail. Wilson's "Colt: An American Legand" is similar. They have good serial number charts. There are many books on the Government Model and Automatic Pistols, but not much on the Post-War revolvers, among which are some of the rarest Colts of all time (Courier, Air Crewman, Mark III Officers Model, etc.).

Check out the on-line book dealers, the Shotgun News/Gun List book dealers, Barnes & Noble, etc.. Buy one of each title that sounds interesting.

Let me know what you get, and how you like it.

Thanks Judge, I will do some looking. As you can tell I don't know much about Colt firearms, which is what occasioned the question. I will keep you posted, Thanks again!

Judge, Wilson and Sutherland was not hard to find, 10 copies available, but you were correct about expensive! The 1993 edition is offered at $250 and the first ed. at $425 and up! I probably won't be getting that one!

If you are interested in Colts, you should buy a Wilson-Sutherland book. If the reprints are only $250, they will soon be higher. (Who has them so inexpensive?) I suggest you get one now. An original for $495 is also a bargain.

Well, I did find a first edition of the Heritage book for $35 and it is on the way. I have a large library, including a couple of hundred gun books, but $250 is a bit steep for a "hobby book," In fact I don't think I have spent over $200 for a book in my field. I am not sure my interest in Colts, runs that deep, and I am probably not knowledgable enough to be buying gun books as investments.

Check: http://whipper.abebooks.com/abep/il.dll?ph=1 and put in The book of Colt Firearms and Wilson and Sutherland, and it will take you to 10 available copies. Thanks much Judge!
