It is a JOKE. Amish people don't use electricity, and take some pride in their self-sufficiency. I think an Amish person, in the unlikely event that he did have access to electricity, a computer, and the Internet, would giggle at the joke.

It isn't like some sort of stereotypical bigotry, such as making a joke about Jews being cheap. That the Amish eschew modern conveniences is a FACT.

I never met any real Amish, but I did know some Mennonites, a branch off that tree. Mennonites use cars and tractors but still embrace a simple, no-frills lifestyle. The ones I met were fine people with a good sense of humor.

Actually the ones I've told that one to got a mild chuckle out of it, after I explained it to them that is.
The joke that gets them rolling on the floor is the "Amish drive by shooting" one.
Wouldn't it be nice if our kids had the same work ethics and common curtasy as the Amish children? The boys (and girls too) look forward to being old enough to help with the chores, be it weeding the garden, collecting eggs, cleaning out the pig barn, mowing and bailing hay etc.
They don't believe in lawsuits, social security, welfare or any other form of goverment aid. If they get injured or sick the whole community pitches in to make sure that all the work gets done while there down. The children (here) attend school until their 16 or finish the 8th grade (whichever comes first), The teachers are selected from among the best scholers (students).
If you believe in "home schooling" thank the Amish as it was there reluctance to send their children to public schools that made it legal.

Well once I defended a seemenly primitive looking amish from a group of vandals ,at the moment he was so grateful he just took a gem looking device from his pocket and grabbed my hand wile speaking...
transposition!,Agarti! ,instantly I was teletransported to an undergrownd City the sise of New York,he explained why they are here ,how their world was destroyed by neglect and abuse of technology and why they prefer not to use technology at all ....

Most of them have evolved beyond the use of technology ......
But i still think they are too much fanatical ....

(No valance), so as to end the discusion I took the Jewel from his hands teleported myself to other coordinates ,programed the jewel to teleport itself back to him ,erasing the data of the previous ones .... (To prevent "Amish in black" from getting to me) I was wise also as to erase the teleport DNA,RNA data from the "stone" too,(as to prevent bio-field trace ).

Quite An interesting device! but a red-hot potato ! a technology based in faith-energy ,total control of mater....quite advanced.

It took me quite some years to digest their culture ,but as I look at the Techno-Feudal civilization developing ,I realy understand why they stayed with the 18 century technology as a way of life ....

In hardship, they "survive" we just "die" simple and true.....

Dont believe it ?? OK! fix your own car computer when it fails!
Use corn cobs for toilet paper.... (You get the point!)

Just be carefull with them.....OK! They are not what they seem to be.......One may be reading this posting right now with a big smile on his face.....

I lived in Lacaster, PA. for 22 years and they are not the People you read about in the Brochures.

Their lawyer, John Pyfer, is why I limp everyday of my Life. That's another story I'll tell later. I certainly won't hire him again.

TWO AMISH MEN ACCUSED OF COCAINE DEALS WITH MOTORCYCLE GANG

Federal prosecutors in Pennsylvania yesterday accused two Amish men of buying cocaine from a gang called the Pagan Motorcycle Club and distributing the drug to other young members of the religious group at parties known as "hoedowns."

"We've seen plenty of underage drinking cases but a drug case is unheard of" among the Amish, said John Pyfer, who is representing Abner Stoltzfus, 24. The other defendant is Abner King Stoltzfus, 23, who is no relation.

The case in Lancaster County underscores the vulnerability of the Amish, who have seen suburban development and tourism encroach on their once secluded lives. The suburbanites and the gawkers have made it difficult for the Amish to close their eyes to what they consider the corrupting influences of modernity. Members of the sect do not have electricity or plumbing in their homes, and still make their way around the county in horse-drawn buggies. The two men accused belong to the most conservative Amish sect, the Old Order Amish.

Most work as farmers or craftsmen, and do not stray far from their homes. Abner Stoltzfus worked as a roofer, Pyfer said, and met Pagan members on his work trips outside Lancaster.

The two men were indicted yesterday on charges of participating in a conspiracy to distribute more than $1 million worth of cocaine and methamphetamine. Federal prosecutors placed most of the blame on eight members of the motorcycle gang, who were described as reckless and violent. Emory Edward Reed, president of the Pagans' Chester County chapter, broke one of the defendant's legs with an ax handle when he refused an order, and knocked out the other defendant's teeth when he failed to pay on time.

While members of the biker gang were known as habitual lawbreakers, no one from the Amish had ever been involved in such serious criminal activity, attorneys said. The two Amish men allegedly bought the drugs from gang members between 1992 and 1997 and distributed them at parties of youth groups known as the Antiques, the Crickets and the Pilgrims. A juvenile identified only as CS also participated in the conspiracy, according to prosecutors, but was not charged in the indictment.

Pyfer said "it was pretty clear" his client had been addicted to cocaine, although he no longer is. No date has been set for the arraignment, but Pyfer said his client would plead not guilty.

During the five years the two men were allegedly distributing cocaine, they were participating in an Amish rite of passage translated loosely in English as "sowing your wild oats," said Pyfer. Amish men between the ages of 16 and 24 take a long break from the rigid rules of the community to decide if they want to opt out. During the break, the men drink and drive "bright, gaudy cars," said Pyfer, while "their parents are looking the other way." Taking drugs is not an accepted part of that rite, however.

We drove through Amish Country several years ago, while on Vacation my wife bought a hand maid quilt she loves. But I couldnt believe how strong and durable the things they make are.Im with them they have the right ideas.Except I cant figure out why they wont take Vaccines such as polio and all the other ones.I did learn one thing about there culture.A married man wears a beard, but a single man is clean shaven. And I bought some home made candy that was the best candy I ever had.My wife said we should try and order some more(I just laughed and told her no doubt she is a true Blonde).

Rosie, it's TEETS, and not that other word. Grew up with and worked with the Amish and they are very misrepresented by the media and popular culture.

It is evident ,a reaction similar as to a primitive being that has never seen fire ,drive an auto of fly a plane, whats so bad about
teleport technology in hands of the Amish ? its like riding a car or a plane or a horse carriage ..... ? You need LSD to drive a car...
well with that perception of limited reality maybe?

You realy dont know how many wonders the lord may provide them with the time normal people usualy waste in TV ,sex or booze ...

Maybe they already attained interplanetary travel and you may be ignorant about it!........ ( Like the Mormons did years ago..)

We had an Amish family that lived and worked on our family dairy for quite a while. Their home was also the gathering point for the local Amish community on each Sunday, so I got to know them fairly well.

As a group of families begin to move into an area they will form what they refer to as a community and set their own local standards of behavior, within certain guidelines. All families within a community are expected to follow these standards. You can even spot whether someone is from a different community by small details of their clothing, such as the particular pattern of lace on a womans head covering. This is done so no one feels to be of a higher stature by their dress. Each community will only become so large before families branch off, form a new community and start the process over with their own set of accepted standards.

As for their use of technology, this varies from one community to the next. Some go so far as to use nothing electrical and no internal combustion engines. In other communities you might see them using tractors or setting up a manufacturing business using machinery. I've seen appliances, such as sewing machines, that were set up for both electrical and manual operation due to the standards of one of their former communities. It wouldn't surprise me at all if there were Amish communities that condone the use of computers, as long as their purpose fit in with the local standards.

I'll second what others have said here, for the most part they're misrepresented. And also, like the rest of the world, some are good hearted and others are jerks.

These days Amish people in Lancaster County like to toy with the technicalities! I see Amish walking around talking on a cell phone, but as long as the phone is not in there house where people can see it, it is okay.

The Mennonites use the tractors, a lot of the time steel wheeled. The can also drive cars, as long as the drome is blacked out and they arent fancy. The Amish can and do own trucks, and powered equipment. They just hire one of us "damned English" to drive them to and from the job site or even the diner if they happen to own a van or two. There was a Amish that worked at a seed warehouse, he started driving the forklift, going out to dinner with the guys, and they recalled him. He was getting to English.

For Judge, someone who has never even seen a lobster more than likely hasnt invented space travel. Just a guess but........
